My reception is down to about a quarter of a mile. What happened?

broken antenna or cracked coax? Grab ahold of your antennas at the mounts and see if they still feel snug, sometimes the internal parts inside the mirror assemblies come loose.
If the brackets for the antennas are external, get a new section of coax and while you are sitting still run it from the radio to that antenna, if it makes it better, put the new coax in place permanently. If no change, it may be something in the radio, but check that you haven't moved the RF gain knob if you have one!

Can't see anything wrong. This is on a Pete 387. They are notorious for poor reception. I guess I will have to start a process of elimination.

If it is a firestick or similar wound antenna, Often the wound copper wire under the plastic shielding will break and go undetected. If you have a spare try screwing it on. What radio are you using?

Terry, have you also lost transmit range? I know it's hard to tell if you can't hear people answer you from 4 or 5 miles away, though.
This is one of those times when a radio's built-in SWR bridge can help you some, at least because the SWR should be really high if the antenna circuit has either opened or shorted.
What kind of radio is this?

Cobra 29 WX NW ST. We are talking about a 1/4 mile reception. Obviously, I can't talk to anyone for very long. Within the 1/4 the reception if very strong. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. It has never been a real long distance radio. I have had it peaked and tuned at a CB shop across from the Pilot in East Texas somewhere close to Tyler, TX, maybe Shadey Grove? At the time it was peaked and tuned, he used a SWR meter and checked out my antennas. He said they were perfect. I have checked it again with the SWR meter in the radio, knowing they are not the most calibrated. It seems to be fine.

On a Pete 387, are both antennas used for the CB or only one and the other of TV reception?
