I am starting SWIFT driver Academy in San Antonio the 16th. I have SOO many questions. Me as a new driver for SWIFT what kind of Truck should I expect to be assigned to just getting out of training? And how old? I have seen Volvos, Freightliners, and Internationals. The recruiter says nothing older then 18 months??!! That sounds kinda odd to me. Seeing how I would still be GREEN and maybe bump into something accidentally.:biggrin_2554: I am not wanting to be surprised or go into this company blind. That is why I am asking all of you Swift Drivers so many questions. My soon to be ex husband was L/O for PRIME and we had a 09 Pete with 300,000 miles on it when we got it. The only thing that happened to it while we had it was at Wally World in Oklahoma the radiator hose clamp vibrated loose and we lost ALL of our coolent in there lot.:biggrin_25524:

Huh? I got a 2010 with 75k miles on it for my first truck. Think it depends on timing more than anything.

How long did you work for Swift grnberet?

To the OP, AZS is correct. Your timing and what truck is available at that moment is what decides what you get. However, the only time Swift has given us a truck that wasn't great was a loaner we had while ours was being fixed. And even the loaner was okay but we were spoiled by the truck we had at the time.

Yep, you get what's available. I always keep telling myself every time I go to the shop, oh please let there be a 780, please let there be a 780.

I'm on my 5th truck since I started with Swift since Dec 09. 3 08 Volvo 670's, one 08 Freightliner Columbia, and now I'm in an 07 Volvo 670.

I'm just glad I haven't been crammed into a single bunk, yet. This truck I have now was the last double left, the rest there were all single Volvos. I could probably manage, but I'd have to play switcheroo every night with my stuff, since the top bunk right now is all filled up with clothes and soda/water.

I'd guess that you could expect a Volvo. They seem to be the primary truck I see (and the hood release is under the steering wheel). That said, I've seen just about everything except a Pete or Western Star with the Swift logo.

Someone meantioned POS. This happens for a reason. Now if you were having trouble with a truck and you DM offered you a new (to you) truck, would you take the time to put your old truck into the shop with a list of all problems? I do because I feel it's my duty to the company, but many drivers just clear out their junk. It's part of our job to get the trucks and trailers fixed, but doing so means losing drive time by dealing with the shop. So some drivers deal with the shop only when it's absolutely critical.

When you are given a truck, do what Rollover has posted in the new drivers forum. (I'll try to find and link it) Be prepared that the truck will need a little shop time. If it doesn't (Like Nana's), then you're lucky.

Hope this helps. Good luck and may you get your dream rig.

A newer solo driver is not likely to get a 780. They are normally reserved for mentors and teams.

Like everyone else is saying, it's pretty much luck of the draw. If you have any choice at all, try to pick the oldest one you can find. It will be one of the first traded in for a new truck and whoever is in it when its number is called gets the new truck.

My first was an '03 Columbia with nearly 700K miles on it. I liked that old truck. It looked like death warmed over. I called it "Old Baby" and after getting a couple of things fixed on it, it ran and ran. After that, an '08 Volvo with 29 miles on it. This was in 2007.

And yes, Ms. Nana...I know you miss Thelma.

Funny Injun. My 1st rig was an 03 Columbia as well. After a handfull of fixes ( tranny swap and a bad radiator pipe), it ran like a top. Funny thing, when it started popping out of 7th under a load, I thought I was screwing up. Only reason I got out of it was to upgrade to a 4 axle for more loads. That 3 axle limited me to reefers in my fleet.

it used to be how well you did with your mentor... log violations and such and their review of you over all... you do well you get a nicer truck and the opposite if you don't do so well...

but i heard they have cut the amount of trucks back so what they got ready to go is what you get
