I'm about to take my cdl permit test this upcoming Friday but I got some crucial questions before I take it.
Do I have to take all the endorsements tests the same time I take the permit test? I'm going for regulars; air brakes, doubles, triples, tanker, haz-mat.
It would be alot easier to take the permit tests before the driving test or after the driving test.
I've done a-lot of studding for all of them but I might want to brush up on all of them before going Friday.
I'm in South Florida if that matters.
Is there any permit/endorsements test taking tips?
Related but unrelated question,
Will living in South Florida hurt me with getting home with dispatchers?

some states do not allow you to take the hazmat test till you have the CDL first, so check with YOUR state..
you NEED the permit so you can take the driving test...
read the questions SLOWLY and the FIRST answer that pops into your head is usually ALWAYS the correct answer.
yes, big time...living way down there, do not expect to even be hired right away.... -
Thanks for the quick reply,
I don't think I was 100% clear on what I was asking.
When I go Friday to get my CDL permit will I be tested on the endorsements I want that same day or do I take the endorsements test when I take the driving test? -
when you go for your permit, you can take "some" of the endorsement tests then...but check with YOUR DMV regarding the hazmat endorsement..first, you NEED the finger printing, then you take the test...however, SOME states DO NOT ALLOW you to take the hazmat endorsement test UNTIL you have an actual CDL in your hand....but you CAN STILL at least get the finger printing done and out of the way...

I went Friday only ready for the written exam and was told to get my cdl permit I would need to pass Air-Brakes and Combination as well.
I got 48 right out of 50 on the written exam - passed
20/25 on air brakes - passed
Failed Combination
Bummer
Didn't get my permit, but i've studied up and i'm confident i'll get it on Monday.
While i'm there (30 mile drive) i'm going to get double/triples, and HazMat out of the way.
In Florida you have to take the hazmat test one place, fingerprints another, then back to the dmv to send it to the state.
So when it's all said and done, ill have my CDL permit with
Air-Brakes
Combination
Double/Triples
Haz-Mat
From what i've read this is the industry standard for OTR drivers. Am I wrong or should I just suck it up and get them all while their $7 bucks a pop? (Even passenger and school-bus) -
Are you in a school or are you doing this on your own? Just curious.
-
Yes,
My schooling doesn't really start until I show up there with the permit. They seemed less then thrilled about helping until I got the permit on my own.
I got a friend with Swift and thats the company I will be starting out with out of their Ocala terminal -
Hmm, OK. Well you will save yourself a few bucks from the school if they didn't help you with the written test. If you are going to start out with swift, make sure they recognize the school you plan on attending. I haven't heard of a school that doesn't help with the written test.
-
That sounds funky to me. (no help on the written test) but do make sure Swift approves of the school or you may get stuck in there school at an additional cost to you.
you have to have Gen, Comb, and Air brakes. CDL A
Hazmat opens up more loads you can haul (more miles)
dbl/tip may help
Tankers if you ever want to do that -
Well, the help they offered was a booklet I couldn't take home full of questions and answers I would see on the tests and the opportunity to take their practice tests.
In addition to asking the instructors anything I wanted. If they are approved by swift? I don't know.
The classroom is chucked full of CRST stuff and pictures of past students with the recruiter from CRST.
The Swift opportunity came to light after I signed up for school and was told by my friend to just get my CDL and he would get me in contact with the right people. If that's the true story, I don't know.
Also, is getting my passport important for OTR?
