    give crete a call and read some of the crete blogs / been good to me from beginning till now almost to my secnd yr and still happy good training program best out there . dont use u as a nite driver while trainer sleeps u run on 1 log book go see my posts my first days at crete itll be helpful

    I'm sure there are a lot of good specialized jobs out there but these are the big companies out there that you can make a career out of from my experience - in order just based off what I think. These generally aren't starter jobs but after a year or two they're all worth a look.

    1. UPS Parcel
    2. UPS Freight
    3. Wal*Mart
    4. FedEx Freight
    5. Con-way Freight
    6. Old Dominion

    All of those jobs are based on seniority boards so it can take a while to pay off but all of those companies are worth sticking around for..

    Well, I went with roehl transport in marshfield wi. Had a good run with them for 1.5 yrs. They hire "NOOBS" and have a really good training program. As far as pay goes, check their website, may have changed since i was there. I averaged 500 net a week.

    I went flatbed so i could stay, reasonably, in shape and get in to heavy-haul at some point in my "career". Flat is not that bad really. frozen tarps in the winter was the worst thing i dealt with. but once you get a system down, you can go from tarping a lumber tarp load in 2 hrs. to 45min. You will know if you are cut out for flats in about 2 weeks.

    Your attitude is going to make you or break you anywhere you go. The freight has to be moved, and it's your job to move it. So be prepared to not get home on the exact day you want. I was on roehl's 11 out- home 3 program and i always got 3 days off, but, usually out 14-16 days. So i decided to start staying out 30 days and taking 7 days off to save the arguments with my dispatcher (which i wasn't winning.LOL). This worked out great! longer runs, mostly 1000- 1200 miles a load avg. So, be flexible.

    Now I am with conway freight. It's alright, but being low man sucks. I miss the road.

    Haha.. I guess it's a small world - I started at Roehl and am now at Con-way Freight.. Like I said in my above post, it takes some time at seniority based driving jobs. If you just miss the road that's one thing, but I've been here over 7 years now and it took every bit of 5 years to pay off but I wouldn't trade this job for anything else behind the wheel now..

    Been a long time now and I'm sure a lot is different now, but I'm glad I started with Roehl and left there with nothing bad to say about the company - just didn't care for the OTR thing.. Not for me.. Roehl treated me real good back then though..

    I haven't been on the road for quite awhile, but I was a flatbedder/heavy haul, and I can tell you the differences are there....more work, get dirty tarping and securing, and yes, you can fall......but, no lumpers, no 3 am hitting a dock, and in my experience, you are usually hauling something someone is waiting on, and the respect level is better.

    If you are willing to do LTL and the hassles of stop and drop on a flatbed, you can make a lot of money running cross country. Tarping a load is all about experience...it doesn't make the tarps lighter, but, knowing the tricks takes a lot of the work out of it....

    Thanks for the input guys. I will take a look at Roehl. It seems like it is easier to get started if you live out east. Lots of carriers are not hiring in the west for students right now it seems.

    As for the whole flatbed thing, I am not swayed. With my back, I do not want to subject myself to any unnecessary heavy lifting... I understand the argument, just not my thing.

    Thats about the exact same list I would come up with to, I just started with UPS Freight. Great job, sucks being the low man but well worth it in the years to come. I would also throw ABF on there as long as they stay in business with all there outrageous pensions they owe.
