A little history to start.......Im currently on week 2 of a 5 week trucking school. Ive been researching prospects Id like to pull for since last October. I finally decided TMC sounded like a company Id be interested in, so I applied 3-6-11 to get a pre-hire.
Their recruiter came in today(3-10-11) to do his thing and feed us his line. He informed us that the company expects you to call and check the status of your application. So, I gave them a call during my lunch break. The recruiting department told me that their computer shows my application as "rejected". When I asked if there was a reason, I was told there was no reason listed. Next, I call the recruiter that had just visited my school 2 hours before. I told him what had happened and asked if he would be able to find out why it was rejected so I could fix any issues. He said, "Its company policy not to disclose reasons for rejection." I asked if it was possible that I may have missed a section of the online application to cause the rejection. After just telling me it was company policy not to disclose reasons for rejection, he goes on to say, "No, if it was incomplete, that would be the reason listed and they would have told you on the phone."
Afterwards, I was telling my instructor about the situation. He said he could tell me the reason for both, the rejection and TMC refusing to tell me why. The numbers on my application scared them away. Im 6'3" and 325 lbs. He said he has saw it before and knew it was a possibilty for me when applying online. Now I know 325 lbs. sounds huge, but Im really not THAT big. Look at professional athletes.....many of them are 300+. Im no pro athlete but Im far from sloppy fat. They never even gave me a chance to prove myself or even let them take a look for themselves. They could have just turned away a 325 lb. bodybuilder with 2% body fat, based on weight alone.
There were no blemishes on my driving history, work history, medical history, criminal background, or anything. I dont see what else would cause them to reject me. I understand where they would see an extremely obese person as more of a liability. I feel they should have gave me a chance though. My weight doesnt affect my movement at all. In fact, my weight would be an advantage over someone weighing 150-175. Put both of us up on top of a load with a tarp in windy conditions, and see whos blown off the trailer first.

Probably another reason why they have so many empty trucks in their yard. Their way to strict and anal I heard. Try Maverick, they are better co from what I've read here.

Why would you want to work for a company that would exclude you for that reason anyway??? When I filled out my app online it didn't ask me my height or weight??? Just my birthdate, lic # and SS but....

If that is in fact the reason they rejected you (your size) they wont tell you that. It's called discrimination.

No, I definitely dont want to work for them now. I would like to think they were better than that, but I cant think of any other reason they would have to reject me. And, the application i filled out online did ask for height and weight.

Well, if you want to work, you can always come to Prime. :) I'll give you my recruiter's name and number, even.

Plus, the little referral bonus wouldn't hurt. ;-)

Thanks for the advice. Im really looking for more hometime than Prime offers, but Ill keep them in mind. Ive been looking into Builders Transport and Gypsum Express. Gypsum pays $100/week more during training, but they dont let you take the truck home for your weekly 48 hour hometime. Im actually not looking for strictly flatbed jobs, I wouldnt mind dry van at all. Flatbedding just seems to be the best jobs around my area offering what Im looking for (hometime, pay, benefits, and hiring recent graduates)

Ive done some research on Maverick, too. I like the sounds of them as well as the other flatbed companies Ive mentioned. Im hoping thr Maverick recruiter makes it to the school soon.

Interesting...... I hear recruiters ######## all the time...... my carrier will pay me $1200 to bring in a body and they toss this guy like there's all these choices waiting.

Trucking had better wake up...the ONLY reason they have a decent pool of applicants is because the economy is in the bucket. When the pendulum swings back ( and it will ) it will be empty iron on the fence again. ( but what do I know)

    drvrtech77 and helmintoller Thank this.
