I found the right forum. I first saw it it in the political forum. I got news last night before I went to bed. This is totally tragic and the worst thing Japan didn't want to happen. My prayers to all the families in turmoil now. The death toll is rising quickly.
Natural disaster like this just leave you in aw . I can't get over the destruction of the tsunami. You never heard about these things and the past decade they are all more frequent.

Was up late watching it last night. Seeing those folks driving on that road, then wham... Wall of debris just nailed em. Lord help em. My thoughts are with them. Heck, just a second ago ANOTHER quake hit 6.4 or something. Different fault line

Cooling equipment fails at Fukushima No.2 plant

The Tokyo Electric Company has warned the Japanese government of an emergency situation at a second nuclear plant in quake-stricken Fukushima Prefecture.

Tokyo Electric issued the warning about its Fukushima Number Two Plant on Saturday. The warning follows one earlier in the day for the Number One Plant.

The government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said equipment failures have made it impossible to cool 3 of the plant's 4 reactors. It said the situation poses no immediate threat of a leakage of radioactive materials.

Venting air from reactor container begins

Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says in order to avoid a breakdown at the Fukushima No.1 reactor, the operation to release air from the containment vessel began on Saturday morning.

The agency says even if radioactive substances in the container are released in the air, the amount is expected to be very small. It also says the safety of evacuated residents in 10-kilometer radius from the plant will be secured.

At one point, radiation rose to a level 1,000 times higher than usual in the central control room. Rising pressure could damage the container.

University of Tokyo professor Naoto Sekimura says before releasing air inside, radioactive substances will be removed with filters.

More than 442 believed dead in quake

The scale of the death and destruction following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan is growing worse by the hour. 256 people have been confirmed dead and at least 200 others are believed to be dead.
On top of that, more than 740 people are missing in several prefectures in the country's northeast.

Police say 200 to 300 unidentified bodies have been found in the city of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture. A tsunami made its way 10 kilometers inland from the coast. 62 people have been confirmed dead in the prefecture.

In Kesennuma City, a major fire has engulfed wide areas facing the bay. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency says the flames may have been sparked after oil ran out of a tank following a tsunami.

In Iwate Prefecture, 74 people have been confirmed dead. Police there say more than 130 are missing, mainly in coastal areas. The government says the city of Rikuzen-takata is nearly devastated.

In Fukushima Prefecture, 83 people are reported to have been killed and more than 480 people missing.

In Aomori Prefecture, 2 people are missing in Hachinohe City. The scope of the damage by a tsunami there is not yet known.

At least 28 people have been confirmed dead in Tokyo and neighboring prefectures.

In the Japanese capital, 2 people were killed after a building partially collapsed. Another 2 died from inhaling chemicals at a plant.

Air being released from 4 reactors in Fukushima

An operation to release air from containers of 4 reactors has begun at a nuclear power plant in quake-stricken Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan.

Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says the operation began at Fukushima Number Two power plant on Saturday morning to release pressure in containers that are housing reactors.

The operation to release air could lead to the release of radioactive substance. The agency denied the radiation amount will pose an immediate threat to the health of the people living near the nuclear power plant.

Sea water used for cooling down the reactor

The Tokyo Electric Power Company is using sea water as an emergency coolant in its quake-damaged reactor at Fukushima Number One Power Plant.

The massive earthquake on Friday caused a breakdown of cooling systems that could cause temperatures in the reactor to rise to uncontrollable levels.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano disclosed on Saturday that the company is pouring sea water into the containment vessel of the reactor. Sea water is readily available as the plant is close to the sea.

Edano said the company is mixing boric acid with the water to help absorb neutrons to slow nuclear fission.

Edano added that government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency has endorsed the procedure.

Self-Defense Force troops, who are actually in charge of the cooling process, are using pump trucks and other methods to inject the sea water. They say the work started on Saturday evening will be completed on early Sunday.

High level of radiation observed at nuclear plant

Fukushima Prefecture says a high level of radiation has been measured near the Fukushima Number One nuclear power station.

The prefecture says the radiation level rose to 1,015 mircrosieverts per hour on Saturday.

One hour of exposure to this amount of radiation is equivalent to the permissible amount of radiation an ordinary person receives in one year. It is about twice the level that requires power companies to notify the government of an emergency situation.

The government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says the power station's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, observed the radiation level near a gate on the hillside of the plant at 3:29 PM on Saturday, before an explosion was reported at the nuclear plant.

Explosion heard at quake-hit reactor

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency is trying to confirm a report that an explosion occurred at a nuclear power station in quake-hit Fukushima Prefecture.

The agency said on Saturday that a person at the Fukushima Number One nuclear station reported that an explosion was heard and smoke was seen near one of the reactors at around 4PM.

The power station operator Tokyo Electric Power Company told the agency that 4 people were injured.

Video of the reactor in question shows the outer wall of the building that houses the reactor has disappeared.

Prefectural authorities say the power company informed them that the ceiling of the building collapsed after an explosion.

Tokyo Electric Power had been releasing air from the container of the reactor to lower pressure.

Pressure inside the container had been rising after the reactor's cooling system broke down due to power failure.

Radioactive substances have been detected near the reactor.

3 patients exposed to radiation in Fukushima

Fukushima Prefecture says 3 patients at a hospital near the damaged nuclear power plant have been exposed to radiation.

The hospital is located in Futaba Town about 3 kilometers north of the Fukushima Number One Nuclear Power Plant. It is within the designated evacuation area of 10 kilometers around the quake-damaged plant.

The 3 were chosen randomly for radiation testing from 90 patients and staff who were waiting for airlift by helicopter at a nearby high school on Saturday afternoon.

The prefectural government says the 3 need decontamination to remove the radioactivity. They have not shown any reaction or physical symptoms of the radioactivity yet.
