I am interested in entering the field and have been playing with the concept of attending a private school vs going directly to a company. Whats the best method by which to obtain my license

private school. this way you will have a contract with a bank for the student loan.
going to a trucking company school will also get you a contract, in which you will be working for that company for a period of time. payback to the trucking company is done through payroll deductions i do believe. if you become dissatisfied with that company, you still have to pay back what is owed them, and perhaps if they want to, they can mess with your credit as well. at least, from these boards, this is some of what i have "heard" over time. you would be better served to read through the posts for yourself.
but if it were me, and if i could get a student loan from the bank, i'd go that way instead. usually in most instance, 3 to 6 months after you graduate, you start paying back the student loan.Zoltan1a Thanks this. -
i too have been where u are at, what to do,which way to go. after looking at driving schools, and some company training programs, and hearing stories, well leave it at that, tired of all the negative out there. i started looking at the community colleges and found a program 6 weeks long 240 hours thats class and driving time. there will be 3 students per 1 instructor. this feels the most comfortable to me,i feel i wont be rushed, i want to learn. the program cost $ 3500. now this program doesnt qualify for any assistance from grants because its only 6 weeks long.so having to pay for it myself. iam layed off from work ,getting unemployment but think i got i figured out. a driving school,in just three short weeks u can get ur cdl, well its going to take a week or so to study all the information u need to know to pass the tests and what kinda time are u going to have in the truck driving. i have my cdl class a airbrakes, combination, tanker endorsement, and it took longer than a week to study all you need to know. so going through this program to well ,learn more .the emphasis is safety, logs, and regulations and driving time. as i have no experience in a big rig.and i will owe no one for training. and yes i do believe it gives u more options as to who you want to work for totally. the freedom to find a good company, well one that you want to work for anyways.its better to feel good than to be pissed.

I found a few schools which cost around $3800. I am more interested in staying local or closer to home but uncertain if I will be able to land a job and if it is even worth attempting. $3800 is a bit much would certainly be worth the investment if there was much future in it

I spoke to Southwest Truck Driver Training in Las Vegas today and it sounds awesome. Its a total of 160 hours of instruction, split between classroom and truck. The cost is nearly $4000; however, it appears the price wont be changing anytime soon
