Not going to. The School "Salesman" was trying to force a sale and create a sense of urgency. His comment was my current CDL license is valid by the state to be employed but not by insurance standards.. His 30 plus companies would not touch me without the 160/3 weeks of training again for 7k... I told him; I would research his comment and call someone from the Ohio board of insurance to find out specifics. Just seems hard to believe that without retraining, I'm unemployable as a driver... He was not interested in pushing the 40 hr/ $1500 week refresher. Said most companies would not except it... That is 2 days straight line backing on the pad and 3 days on the road refresher.

    U4EA Thanks this.

I'm dealing with a similar issue, so I'm very curious as to how this will work out. I started driving in 2000, and came off the road in '07. I have a clean record. I admit I did do a lot of job hopping in the beginning, which at one time was not an issue with most companies, but now is. I'm dying to get back on the road doing what I love, (wish I had never left, but that's another story) but I'm also being told I will need to go back to school. I understand insurance companies have their reasons, but I would also think that a drivers' history (safety, driving, etc...) would be more important. I'm cool with having a refresher, maybe going with a trainer for a week or so, but to go back to school? At this point, I want to be back in a truck so bad, I'm about willing to do just that if I have to....whatever it takes.

Place an ad out on Truck paper and see if any o/o's are willing to give you a shot. Also, try Swift and Central Refrigerated. Ask them and see if they offer a refresher course. Try roehl as well as CRST.

Thank you for the replies fellas! Most of the larger companies will have a newbie to the industry ride with a trainer for a few weeks/2 from what I understand. The catch is they also want a previous CDL A driver to return for a refresher course before this training. The school will then say you need to complete a full 3 week course at 7 grand in order to be excepted by the larger carrier. So your back to square one. I have talked with JB Hunt and another company that suggested the refresher.

If I were a certified HVAC tech or Licensed plumber; would I have to return to trade school to fully retrain and pay a full tuition in order to return to that field of work after being absent from the industry for a few years? The answer is No. My CDL A license is valid and I have been told it's no good years later.

It's the insurance companies of these big carriers that are requiring the "recent" experience. Don't listen to the bull the guy at the school fed you he's just in it for the "sale".

    Check your PM box.

i can see maybe a small refresher--or out with another driver for a week--but think about--some companies will put newbies right out on the road--but when somebody has been out of the truck for ahile they want him to redo everything--
that really doesnt make any sense--look at the expirience you have--and the newbies just out of school really only know enough to be dangerous

    outerspacehillbilly Thanks this.

Your exactly right. I'd much rather share the road with a guy that had 5 or 6 years under his belt and quit driving for 10 then came back to driving than some guy who had 3 weeks of school and now he's on his own anytime!

Guys thanks for the input.. Begining to think the large outfits own and operate the schools. Sign a contract to cover the 7 grand school loan with 18 percent interest, then sign a one year contract at 26 cents a mile to repay the first contract with a large carrier. I guess it's a pay to play type deal with obtaining a job behind the wheel. Otherwise it's the for Insurance purpose, your not eligible to drive with your current CDL A song and dance. Big business selling driver's education I guess.
