Manual shifting is an odd thing, when by yourself you just do it without another thought. Then you get a passenger, road test or something and you manually think about it and mess it up. I have seen this happen to so many long time and very good drivers over and over again. The eighteen speed I drive is a very square cut kind of gear box, the computer is set on a very fast loop, on top of that I haul tankers. I have seen that truck make a monkey out of the best of the best, at times I grind off a few myself at the end of a shift. All the big deal about perfect shifting is just a bunch of hot air. Some well used trucks you can just throw the shifter in the general direction and it will fall in like you know what you are doing.
The old worn two sticks you could put both shifter knobs together and just throw them together with one hand and they would fall into gear.
I have seen those who are capable of destroying a drive line in a hurry and no amount of time or instruction will do a bit of good, they can not drive and never will be able to drive, unless, some one gives them an autoshift. These are the ones who should not drive a truck period.

I drive for CAT based in Coteau-du-lac,Qc. Cat has a terminal in Mississauga(Dixie rd.) and although Coteau's trucks are all full auto, I'm not sure if the Mississauga and Napanee trucks are ALL auto's. Personnelly, I'm 50/50 on auto vs stick. I went from a Pete379 with 13spd stick to a fully auto Kwt-2000! Both have their good and bad sides. I became a trucker to be on the road and the trucks themselves, auto or stick I don't care! Although I DO think that you should drive some stick for a while before going auto when coming out of school. I drove stick in the rockies, northern Québec,etc...So I don't feel bad driving auto now :biggrin_25522:

Funny PG I learned on a manual shift then my first good driving job they gae me an autoshift It didn't take me long to realize that you have to relearn how to shift. I had an International with the ten speed Eaton autoshift. Push button. You manual shift on the hills then play with your jakes to go down.
Later they gave me a Frieghtliner with the twelve speed auto and I loved it. You switch to manual shift and use it as a manual shift on the hills. Empty they will skate the gears smoothly and quickly.
Backing. Again you have to learn how they work.

I've talked to many old timers though. They swore they would NEVER drive an auto? Then they got into one and three weeks later you could not blast them out of that truck

i have heard the same--people with years and years of expirience --and they love their auto's
i havnt really tried one and the only exposure to them has always been in a bad light, like stuck on a bit of ice--or just wont move---for some unknown reason--but as with any new change people are hesitant--myself included

I drove a late 70's Ford Louisville, It had a Detroit connected to Allison, only small problem was backing up, like previously said a clutch is better for backing.
Other than that is was a blast to drive, especially listening to that Detroit whine.:smt023

Mullen has a lot of winch tractors and bed trucks with 8 speed Allison Automatics.

If I ever bought another new truck, it would have an Allison in it.
