Has anyone had trouble in CA? Had an experience a few days ago... CHP inspector said my brake lights weren't working. At the end his partner said he found my gladhands were leaking at the grommit. When he asked his partner to show us where the partner pulled the hose down and ripped it in half and said it was the hose - not the grommit. They had me fix both problems - I replaced the hose, but the brake lights weren't out - but he said they were. He wrote me up OS for no brake lights and a blown air service hose.

That's 40+ CSA points. My brakes and brake lights working fine before I pulled in. It seems to me that CA is going to update the trucks on their road one way or another. I have a 10 year old Freightliner Classic.

The cop ripped the hose in half?!?...Did you have a mechanic fix the hose or do yourself?...If mechanic, could he say the brakes were working fine?...

CHP got me because my "emergency cross tubes were worn to the 2nd color"...I took the ones the mechanic took off to one of our shops and there was nothing worn on them...

If you have a lot of oxidation built up in your pig-tail then your brakes lights could have been not working when he looked. I spray the old ones with WD-40 and it fixes the problem 9 times out of 10. If the CHP was able to split your hose by hand then I'm sorry you failed your per-trip. I've been up and down the road many times hauling heavy equipment and have been checked a few times. The issue I've found out is that the CHP knows enough if not more than a standard LEO.

I was stopped and inspected in Bullhead City AZ by the local LEO's and they were clowns. They had an issue with another truck and I showed them in the green pocketbook where it was ok and they asked where they could get a book like that. They knew nothing besides the general safety items.

Reporting this type behavior to the Federal Marshall's Office can lead to the marshalls coming through the scale with a truck and busting the scalemasters or inspectors. Truckee, CA was closed after they got real bad, so was Knoxville, TN.
Marshalls might not investigate a lone complaint, but if people regularly complain about a specific scale, they are required to investigate.
The lower tax revenues associated with our current economic woes motivate many officials to try to generate fines, even if the infraction is petty or false, as I overheard a scalemaster in Paduka, KY say one night, to a driver who thought he was cited for a petty issue, " I've got 3 school systems to support."
California can be excessive, I was cited at Castaic, for a low air warning light that went off 2 pounds, TOO SOON. The court in Glendale dismissed it but we don't usually have time to fight citations in court, do we?

This is completely false!! The US Marshall service has nothing to do with trucking. You need to complain up the chain of command.

Was it the scales near San Diego?

I had the exact same thing happen about five years ago. After a level 1 inspection, he told me to come inside. Never said a word. He wrote me up for no brake lights on the trailer. I went out there and wedged my leather log book against the pedal and walked back there. They were working fine.

I went back inside and pleaded with him. The moron said they weren't working when he looked at them. Just to justify his job, he was willing to make stuff up at the cost of a drivers livelyhood. Someone ought to fire that guy.

The OP said Paso Robles--so it had to be a roadside--but he didn't say where--couple of places they like to hang--but not sure

I think it should be a rule, if you can fix it right there . You should not get a ticket. I think thats a fair rule...
