Hey eveybody. I live in Myrtle Beach, SC. I am a recent graduate from a refresher course in Charlotte. I went there because AT went there and was reading his post. Anyway, I'm having a hard time finding a company out here to start with. I have just one actually, so I am thinking about moving to the Charlotte area with a friend to get more opportunities. I called WS and they said that I would qualify for their 10 day deal. I'd rather stay here but it may not be possible. My questions are the following.

What is a realistic expectency about hometime? How long out, how many days in. That sort of thing. I know there is two categories. All 48 and the eastern furniture loads. I don't think I would mind staying out too long if I could see the rest of the country. Just curious.

Winter driving. Never really did it. Don't know how. Don't know how to chain. And if and when you can say "I can't get there safely". Or do you just go no matter what?

I understand that you make multible stops for furniture. Are all these places hard to get into, are their docks at most of them? What happens if I'm late? Do they give you enough time to get there?

Can you bank your days off?

I have more but I can't remember. Like I said I'd rather stay here and it depends on what this other company is telling me. They want me out a minimum of four weeks which in reality probably means five or six weeks. My mother is elderly and I could keep a better eye on her here but I could move and do that too if I had too. Thank you for all your help.

    Dave

Well, AT is out of Conover, I numbered them above so I can try and answer them, I think others will chime in eventually as well,
1)The company asks you to stay out for 21 days, with that you get 1 for every 6 out, 21=3 .
2)W/S is the most liberial company I have heard of, If you don't think you can go anymore then park it, Light load wind gusty like crazy, PARK IT!! We get messages all the time if you don't feel safe in this situation in this location then park it, they would rather a late load then a load claim as well as a truck in the ditch, we are self insured to a certain amount and they really don't like putting trucks back to together after they have been on their sides or even worse, Winter driving is easy it is just like summer driving but more in the dark, It is easy if you don't push yourself, you do not ever have to keep going, just communicate with dispatch, If you try to go and still don't feel good about it then you may not want to go, If you need help or someone to talk to there are plenty of us here to talk you thur it.
3)Some places have docks some don't some are easier then others some are a PITA If you don't feel safe getting in to the location don't do it, If they tell you "Oh we have trucks come here all the time" it doesn't matter don't do it if you don't feel comfortable, your confidence will increase as you drive more but we still get into places where it is not possible with our type of equipment, in these cases just park it and make them come to you, I did this a few times, If they give you any grief then write on the B/L that you were not comfortable in driving in there and the customer refused to come to me.
    4) Yes and no... I will leave this one at that!.

    I hope this helps. TD24:biggrin_255:

Home Time: If you want all 48 states, they ask that you stay out 3-4 weeks at a time, and you get 1 day off for every 6 on the road. You can bank them up. These are also FULL DAYS off unlike most companies who count the day you get home and the day you leave as hometime. if you move to charlotte you'll get to do quite a few 10 hour breaks and 34 hour resets at home, and when you get stuck every now and then in conover you can just go home until they have a load for you.

Now if you want East Cost, you'll be home allot more often, but less miles and allot more physical work.

Winter Driveing: They'll teach you how to chain in Orientation, and they Do exspect you to USE them if/when you need to to get the load there on time. But they are BIG on if you dont feel safe PARK IT!

LTL: Ok, most of the places dont have "docks" which is good and bad. Its good because you dont have to back into anything, but bad when you have a 300lbs piece of furniture you now have to unload to the ground. None of these places are Impossible to get to, sometime there Nearly impossible, and some require a GOOD amount of skill and precision to get into and out of without tareing something up, but as long as you go slow/stay calm and take your time you can do it just fine.

Now they give you a summery sheet for the stops, I'll use and example to make it make more sense. You get to conover, NC Friday 09:00 and they give you a load 15 stops in MN for Monday and tuesday. So you head up there and Monday morning you start as early as you can and you get your 5 stops for the day off by 1pm DONT STOP! lol keep going until you cant do anymore that day, then do the same the next day. If your late or a day early of late, who cares as long as you did all you could thats all they ask. Most of the time the customers are like "oh I didnt know you where comeing" so its not like there sitting there waiting for it lol.

If they say 4 weeks they mean 4 weeks, they WILL get you home when they say and/or when you need to be there.

I would highly recomend this company to you, as I dont know many companies that are this flexible with hometime or go this far out of there way to get you home when you need to be there!

If you have any more questions dont be affraid to ask!

Oh and how did you like the Cabovers?

I did a 80 hr refresher. I took about three weeks M-Thurs. Instructors were Benny for class. Then I was kicked around from Tom, Gino and Mario. All seemed pretty cool to me. Learned from all of them. I was lucky to have to be in those backing trucks in the summer. Bet you they are hot. Man they were rough.

hot, sheet It was HORRIBLE! lol you literaly had to wipe the inside of them down after someone got out it was retartedly hot in there! 100 outside 130 inside lol

The only one of those guys I know is Mario, and I'm surprised he's still there when I left he was about to buy a truck, he had a local Container gig lined up. Did he show you his crazy backing skills?

The weekend class is better, they break the rules and teach you how to drive out on 2 lane country roads and roads so skinny you need both lanes and at the 45 mph speed limit with blind curves haha

LOl, Mario was saying the ssame thing to me about buying his own truck. He never shown me his backing though. I heard the guy on the weekend teaches you a little bit more of the real world experience kind of stuff. My instructors tried to do some of that stuff as well be there were too many students in the truck. Even though I'm from myrtle Beach, sc I'm glad I decided to go there for the refresher. Now I just need to find a job. I have a chance for one compant here. USX. I know it's not great. I have three that I'm looking at. USX, schnieder and WS. I like the sound of WS but the other two would allow me better opportunity to look in my mother once in a while. Which is kind of important since she is all alone here. Just hard to make a decision. I like the no trainer bit though...for sure. That's a huge plus.
