Outerspacehillbilly accomplished that some time ago. I would suspect it would be an even much tougher feat in 2011. I saw a thead recently where the industry is pushing to make schooling mandatory.
Truck driving schools are like slot machines for companies (SCAM!)

They will most likely accomplish it too. The ATA and all the BIG carriers can pretty much get anything they want done.
-
That they sure do. Kind of disgusting actually.
-
We're not going to make this guy happy, no matter what - he expects FREE schooling and a FREE truck.... maybe Obama will build a welfare/buyout program just for HIM.
Dude needs a clue as to what working and living in the real worlld is like. -
Yeah.....Good idea, Go buy A worn out POS for $5000 with no knowledge about trucks or how to run them or how to even get work for one.
Let us know how THAT works out for you!
You won't make any money either genius! If you're dumb enough to buy a $5000 truck off Craigs List and you don't have at least $20,000 in the bank....Good luck!
What the hell is a 587?l2rr2l Thanks this. -
He wont be buying a truck...he will however; will be buying a money pit. Dude, have you even looked at what steer and drive tires cost?
Better yet: What it will cost you to fill both of those big ole tanks every couple of days. -
My state (Indiana) is broke, they don't have any money to pay for my schooling.
A lot of states won't pay for truck driving schools because of how the trucking industry treats drivers and all the recruiters trying to exploit people.
My unemployment agency wont pay for ANYONE to go to school because of how the trucking industry is. They said its not a reliable source of income, and wont stopped paying for truck driving school. -
How did I miss this thread?
*rubs my hands together*
Hoobilly, here's the thing hun: you, a person with no experience in the industry came onto a forum of truck drivers and proceeded to tell them how things should be. It gets people riled up.
Now, if you want to be a truck driver then you'll need to meet the requirements for the job. Part of those requirements is LISTENING and LEARNING.
I have a question for you: exactly which company said you would have to be a slave for a year if they trained you? -
News Flash! All states are broke.
Try Federal school loans. If the school your looking at dosent deal with the feds stay away.
Im out $100 a month for both loans. A doable amount.
Its all posible if you have the drive and are willing to do it.
Im on a 6yr plan to get a new truck. Its not going to be easy, but it can be done.
Most people dont understand the JOB. and think they are beeing "exploited"
It take a special breed of people to do this. Not everyone is upto or able to do this. -
No disrespect to the more senior drivers here, but I thought that most states had a requirement for xx number of hours (each state varies) at a certified school prior to issuing a CDL-A.
OP: Just about the only way to get a CDL-A AND a job driving will be to go to school. But, I'll offer you an alternative. I believe that some Less Than Load (LTL) companies such as UPS, Fed Ex etc, start their employees on the docks and work them into driver positions. The companies either pay for the school or work them into lower cost loans. You can earn while you learn. Perhaps some of our LTL drivers could clarify?
Like the others have said, get the BP down and try to keep the attitude in check.
Just found WA state requirements, which is 160 hrs broken down into backing, classroom, range, road exp, etc.
Class A160 total hours, including at least:
- 40 hours of classroom instruction
- 18 hours of street driving training
- 16 hours of training in backing maneuvers
- 16 hours of proficiency development
- 70 hours of combined lab training, range training and observation
