I know this may sound goofy, but never having towed anything, I had the hardest time with left an right. As in, if I want the trailer to go this way, which way to I have to steer. My then boyfriend got me a toy tractor trailer, just a small one, and told me to "practice" driving it. And it really helped.
Mind you, I am left and right challenged anyhow, but at that time it help cement in my brain what I seemed to forget as soon as I needed it driving (or backing up).lil may Thanks this. -
Be cautious as you drive your personal vehicle arriving and departing from school. Your instructors are observing your attitude. One of my classmates was reprimanded for showing off while leaving the parking area after class.

When backing to hook up a trailer, I still catch myself turning right to go left sometimes!

Pay attention and take notes. If something you hear from an experienced driver doesn't make sense, find out why, there is probably a good reason. Drive your car responsibly, your license/record now become a huge factor in your career, you have to be on top of it any time you are behind the wheel of any vehicle.
Read up on your state's manual, and ask questions here! We sometimes try to be a helpful bunch! Good luck! -
Something I found to help with this when in my training was to have you hand at the bottom of the wheel and swing in the direction you want the trailer to go, as for backing without a trailer I too find myself swinging in the wrong direction occasionally even in my personal vehicle.
Best of luck and unless you have it set-up already, don't be surprised if you have to go with one of the national Co. to get experience before you can work for a local Co. so be prepared to work for some sh1tty company with sh1tty reps, don't believe everything the recruiters say since they get paid to fill trucks. Just bite the bullet and serve your time to get that job you want. -
There was a woman in my class that had no clue how to back. She failed the backing test twice and had one more shot. We also went to Walmart and bought a toy tractor trailer. After playing with it on a table she finally got the concept down. The next day she passed her test!

It does help alot. -
I've used that advice alot.
