Hound...while you are in school, be sure to work on your prehire. Contact as many companies as possible. A gap between CDL school and your first job looks like a break in your training and companies don't know how to handle it and will shy away from you. Go from CDL right to work!
I don't see much of the Conway terminals unless relaying a load through one, or if it is on my route I will stop to top off tanks, grab any paperwork I am low on and that is about it.
The 7500 miles takes about 3 weeks. I did it in 18 or 19 days. You do most of the driving, you do not run as a team at Conway.
Travel light, blanket, sheet, pillow, a week worth of clothes, work gloves, and that's about it.
Conway pays you 26 cents per mile with your trainer...you are done in 3 weeks. I found their 1 year payback to be the best of all companies that hire students. You go to 30 the day you get your truck, 32 when you hit 60,000, 34 at 90000 and 36 at 120000.
Add a penny for safety bonus. After a year, I will look again at the competition. 120k miles in a year is not unreasonable.
I hope this helps.

Thank you
I am already doing the pre hire stuff. I am working on getting the Hazmat endorsment also. Does Conway allow riders? -
Just need birth certificate or legal id, safety will give a riders pass good for a year.
Only one passenger at a time, but can have a bunch of riders passes on file. -
And the best part is, unlike some companies, rider passes for Con-Way are FREE and there is no kinda fee or pay deduction for having a rider on the truck

It took me 15 days to get my truck. Well if you don't count the week waiting for finisher then his truck had to get fixed. But go my truck now. Second the travel light. I didn't use half the stuff I brought and still only have one bag. But I guess I had to pack for winter also.
Road Realtor I pretty sure we had the same finisher. James? -
Great thread, in fact this board has been a wealth of information for someone like me who is about to get into this business. I'm another guy who because of a layoff has decided to change careers. Start class on Monday at Crowder though it looks like I won't be going to Con-way, most likely JBS Carriers right now. I've heard very good things about Crowder and it seems like every former student has been happy to go there.

It's been a interesting couple of days. Did quite a bit of classwork and used the simulators today. The simulators are pretty realistic but I'm ready to do the real thing tomorrow. This is a nice school but I wish it would stop raining.

Hello Darkstar
I just graduated Crowder on April 1st and I have to say, I found it a great school! Who is your primary instructor? Kelly was mine, she is AWESOME!
Are you staying in the dorms? I was a dorm student while I was there.
If you have any Crowder questions or just wanna chat feel free to send me a pm
KateyDarkstar Thanks this. -

Janice is my instructor and she has been good so far. Yeah, I'm staying in the dorms and they are ok. Finally drove today and i'm starting to get better at downshifting. Didn't hit any barrels with the trailer so I'm doing good so far I guess. Recruiter from Schneider was here today. -
Funny, we helped install those simulators. They arrived on the last day of our class. They are cool. Wish we had them.
I am glad Janice is back to work. She was scheduled for shoulder surgery when I went through. I think she wore it out from beating on me!!! Tell her Tom Bernardo says hi and am doing well. Will stop by when I come through with a load that has time on it. Last time I came through and had time, it was a weekend.
Have you guys done the slalom course in reverse yet?
Diesel Burner, yes James (storm chaser) was my finisher. Great guy and now a good friend. I chat with him several times a week. He gave me the name Rooster because I always wanted to get going early while he was happy to sleep in when the load allowed it. What did he name you?
Have fun and be safe!!!!Darkstar Thanks this.
