I was wondering if I could learn about your experiences regarding the 2290 Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return:
Do you file the 2290 tax yourself, or is it more convenient to pay a paid-preparer?
Do you use paper or electronic?
What is the advantage of using electronic?
If you used an electronic provider: Could you sent me an message with your experience?
Thanks,
Juan

You can file it yourself at your local IRS office, not a big deal except for the wait...20 min. for me. I am going to set mine up for electronic file through my bank.

I pay mine at the IRS office and get a stamped receipt while there. Heck, they'll even fill it out for ya,

Filled it out and took it to the local IRS office which lucky for me is on 30 miles away

You can efile for the convenience and there are several companies you can use.
http://www.expressexcise.com/ is the cheapest at $9.90 and walks you through like TurboTax.
Then you can deduct the $9.90 on your federal return.
Advantages, no driving out of your way, no waste of your time.galettojm Thanks this. -
The 2290 is due annually by Aug 31, or by the end of the month following the month that you first used your truck on public roads. You can file manually at your IRS office or you can e-file - there are a number of companies who offer e-file, so make sure the one you use is authorized by the IRS to handle this tax. Some do it for you and others just give you the form and you fill it out yourself. My favorite is Comdata. Easy and fast.

I efiled and the IRS is pushing for this. If you have more than 25 trucks you are required to efile.
BUT - not everyone is on the same page. When you efile you get your form back with a watermark on it. I live in IL and can only get my IRP at the office in Springfield - 2 hours away. They want the stamp and will not take the offical form from the IRS. So I had to make a tripo to the IRS office to get the stamp. And tomorrow morning will make the pilgramig to the IRP office. My understanding is that IL is not the only state not on board with the whole watermark deal.
Go figure, Government agentcies not communicating.galettojm Thanks this. -
