If that's the case, then why not just get one of the double OD 18-speeds that are so prevalent & run it in 16th?

Eaton Fuller doesn't make the A ratios anymore (as far as I know) is the reason they aren't listed. The tag will say RTLO 16718A or RTLO 14618A. Its the A at the end that means its a single overdrive. B on the end will mean it has two overdrive ratios.

If you want to run in the direct gear I would choose a B ratio because the direct 1 to 1 gear would be 16th and the splitter button would be forward. This obviously would allow you to drop half a gear without moving the lever where as with the A ratio single overdrive the button would be back forcing a lever shift anytime a lower gear was required.

Because I would rather have 17 forward gears than only 16.

How about rear ratios?? You're serious about 2.64 or whatever it was you posted are you. How do you figure on lifting a load out of a soft spot ???

This is why I am trying to find information on this transmission. Are all the ratios in each gear the same in a single overdrive as a double overdrive? If so, it would not make much sense.

With 2.64 rears a 10 speed direct drive would be all you need. You will never use overdrive with them long legged rears, and pulling any kind of hills you'll be droping gears faster than you can shift with today motors and a 18 speed.

I would not get an overdrive trans because of the power losses thru the overdrive gears. Those power losses equate to burned fuel and with fuel being the major expense it's going to directly impact the bottom line.

The 18 will make up for any perceived losses by just using those lower gears that never get used combined with a taller rear axle ratio to get back close to where you'd be in OD. You also need to look at how often or how many miles you will have it in the big holes. Also keep in mind what RPMs your motor makes power and best efficiency at.

Dropping your cruise RPM does not always mean better mileage and excessive speed aero drag will kill mileage too.

If you want the best of both worlds it's time for a twinstick, but no reason an 18 direct with the right tire size and ratio won't do the trick even at 105GVW. Drivers that chuck drive lines and smoke clutches just aren't doing it right.

:biggrin_25517: Okay, tell me why 2.64 gears are ok, starting in a mudhole somewhere in the woods, grossing 140K? I look forward to hearing why i should be using 2.64,2.79 gears and what im doing wrong? BTW, i havent taken out a driveline in 20 years using foolish 4.33, 5.04 gears. I am very proud of my clutch life and brake life, but i refuse to post exact exact clutch adjustment intervals(always starts a bidding auction).
I truly look forward to more BW...:biggrin_25514:

I ran 4.10's to pull my lowbeds as high as 200,000 lbs. and Super "B" up to 137,000
