Hi All, Future Driver possibly, I have looked at many posts and gathered lots of info. Here's my questions.
Crete and Maverick seem the best . Any other suggestions?
CR England & Werner seem to be the joke of your industry who are the others?
I am 50 years old and need a career change (third time in 30 years of working) Both previous careers lost to technology changes which killed jobs. I can handle hard work done it my whole life, but the time away from home starting out can most wifes take it? Still have one kid at home in High School and 2 in college.
I will start CDL training this summer and be looking to start a new job in August. Not rushing into anything .
I know I need to learn the ropes, Figure put my one year in then look for a local job. Any and all suggestions welcome . Thanks!

Your 2 choices are good one's but then again I'm a happy Crete driver. MAKE SURE the school you attend is PTDI accredited, many Co will only hire from them! Crete will hire from a non-PTDI school but only on an individuale basis.
As far as who to stay away from.. that depends a lot on the guy your talking to and what co he got fired from! Just read all you can about each co your interested in, it's all here
3 changes in 30yrs not a problem, just as long as you can show that you've been employed.baseballcoach Thanks this. -
Thanks ! I will look in to Crete also . Do you have anything to ad about them. How do the companies look at self employed? Had a very good business for 18 years that due to the economy I had to sell in 2007 . Have been self employed in sales since then making little income but that actually was a benefit with 2 kids in college we were able to get more money in grants and scholarships for them, Go figure? But they will finish school and time to find a decent income .

Werner isn't exactly as bad as what people say! I heard horrible things about CR England and CRST! Alot worse then Werner. Maverick and Watkins Shepard are pretty good from what I've heard, but they hire outside my area so they weren't an option for me.
baseballcoach Thanks this. -
Just looked at Watkins Shepard and looks interesting. But I am not in there hiring zone
. If there advertising is for real it looks like a really good company and I haven't found any complaints with a quick search

I just Drove from Chicago to Vermont for a family ski vacation. Based on what I saw on the road,Schnieder was the most I had seen moving followed by Crete and then Swift.
Interesting was between Chicago and into Ohio Roehl was moving the most trucks but died off once you hit PA. & NY.
Werner only saw 3 trucks on the road but maybe 10 sitting in a truck stop. CR England only 3 on the road and 2 in a truck stop , So these 2 companies do not seem to be moving very much.
Also saw alot of Central Refridge trucks . -
do you live near a big city? we just changed our hireing area....
American Trucker -
Schnieder = 60mph and BIG ORANGE truck...and they reserve the right to slip seat you at anytime...
Swift = 62mph not the best nor the worst
CR England = 62mph they will force you to lease
Crete = 62 mph, they have some nice NEW trucks and some OLD ratty trucks, but i've heard they're pretty good
Central = 62mph, NICE trucks, they push their lease really hard, and when I called them last summer they were only hireing people that went through THEIR school...
Roehl = 62 mph, Some new and LOTS of old trucks, can have long wait times to get into orientation and out with a trainer
Watkins Shepard = 65mph, some new and some older 2004+ trucks (most are 2007-2009), all very well maintained, TONS of miles, good money, NO TRAINER, GREAT company
KLLM = 62mph, 2 options Old company truck or NEW lease truck and they do push their lease
Maverick = 62mph new trucks, good company
TMC = 62mph nice shiny petes! follow their rules or go home but otherwise a good company
Navajo = 62mph nice new KW's, they do NOT allow GPS or Inverters in there trucks
theres a little bit of insite into your options, theirs more but those are most of the big ones
American Truckerbaseballcoach and Trilleth Thank this. -
Thanks American-Trucker, That's info that is very helpful to me and I"m sure others. I live suburbs west of Chicago and looked the other day and I thought I was outside of Watkins Shepard's zone.
Schneider Whats slip seat? 60mph to slow
Thanks for the list of other companies, I need to look at all of them , certainly haven't heard of all of them . Lots to learn
Skiing is darn good in Vermont! worth the trip .American-Trucker Thanks this. -
Navajo = 62mph nice new KW's, they do NOT allow GPS or Inverters in there trucks
No GPS? And why is that not allowed? Inverters fine but I love a GPS system.American-Trucker Thanks this.
