I'm thinking about geting another truck. I've heard good things about landstar from retired guys but they havent been there in 5 years. Has anything changed in that time. Is there still lots of work for flats. Rates still good?

    Thaks for any info.

Landstar used to be a good company but, they have been going down hill ever since they went public. Profit for shareholders is the only thing that matters to them.

I have been hauling about 1/3 of my loads for LS. I am getting a better rate than the LS drivers that I am talking to. And when I do the math, all the covered expenses that LS pays the driver are covered with in a month of the extra money I am making on loads.

And most of the drivers that I talk to would not recommend them.

Run under your own authority. Even bad loads pay better than leasing on to someone.

Thay have been geting to drivers bad by not paying permits they will say its a legal load when you show up its not call the broker back some add money some will not and if they do add money they still take the LS cut off that

Also have had alote of brokers say "well its a good back haul" just because its going to my home state dont mean its a back haul there are NO back hauls in my line of work

Don't believe the load and rate sheet they send you. A lot of the loads they post on their load boards don't really exsist.Landstar takes 17% of every load they broker out.:biggrin_25525:

I have been paid the posted rate or better on every load that I have hauled. And 17% beats the 30-35% that they keep from leased drivers.

And I am not one of these guys that thinks the broker should not make money. Anything less than 20% is reasonable.

And thanks, been trying to figure out what % they take.

If you are getting it from LS,thats one thing but when another broker gets it from them and passes it on,it's no longer a good rate.

I know that double brokering happens but isn’t that illegal? It has been a while since I have looked at this but remember something about your broker authority only allowed for placing loads with someone that has carrier authority. Why would a company the size of Landstar allow this to happen?
