The militatry, manufacturing, construction, and many other blue collar jobs will pay you while they train you.

How many other careers expect you to be gone 7 days to 1 day at home, live out of the back of a truck, and work a ton of hours for which you're not compensated? Those "escrow accounts" are ripoffs.

I went to a terrible carrier, tthen a good company, then got rear ended and fired. I start orientation in a few hours with another company today. I'm going to be a tanker yanker. Enjoy Summer in Wisconsin, Winter is a different story.

Most companies recover their "stranded costs" of initial hiring by paying lower par for 6 months or so...many also pay something towards your CDL schooling....like $200 per month.
To make it so you have a reason to stick with a company that may be treating you poorly by trying to get you to stay to get your $50 a week escrow holdings back seem to be a bit odd...
good companies often have stacks of resumes, and they know if they treat you right, you WILL STAY...if you do leave, it just that trucking was not for you.
The $50 a week holdback just seems to be yet another way to tilt the scales in the companies favor, weakening a newbie's postion, giving them little choice but to stay put...
I'm not sure how the system works at WEL , but without an insider posting better info, it seems sketchy.

I went to Green Bay, WI...Wel paid for a flight for me which was great!! Not much to do there but wasn't worried about it...I finally got to go to orientation this last Monday and Did not pass the heavy lifting part! Darn! I did not know they were a 95% load and unload company...I was not able to lift 70 pounds over my head once and 2 times on the other shelf..did do it 1 1/2 times!! LOL! and use this hand held device to pull 200 lbs and push 100 pounds on the same hand held device...as I am a 45 year old woman that has been sitting on unemployment for a year and a half...so I was disqualified. I then was stuck in WI and had to pay my own way home...Personally if they would have mentioned that part of the test I would not have went and had to cry to someone for return home money!! This is not to say it's a bad company...they do disqualify you for hernias too. Sleep apnea is a problem too. They also have you pay for all your shirts, hats, locks and Fithwheel handle puller bar. You also have to pay 1000 dollars for retraining...this all comes out of your checks weekly. But still not saying bad company because I never made the truck...I hope this helps!! Thanks everyone for all the comments...

Just pointing out that there are other industries that will pay for your training. If Wel was such a good company, most of its employees would recognize that, and Wel wouldn't have to take a portion of all of the newbs' paychecks in order to cover the expenses of the few washouts.

Im not saying wel is a good or bad company. I was just saying that someone has to pay for the schooling and it should be the person getting it. I will say this theres no where near the bad info on this company as they are others. All companies have good and bad things , Im sure that wel tells the students about the 50.00 upfront so if they choose to go with them they shouldn't complain about it.... Back when i got my cdl and was taught to drive there was none of this kind of stuff and i know its hard out there in the real world but nothings free atleast not where im from. Maybe all the students should go and pay there complete way at a school then go to work at a company. Lets see how many new drivers we have then.

I did pay for my school out of pocket, more then $4,000 dollars...and wow on unemployment that hurts!! lol! But yeah it could and maybe be a real good job...I picked it...but the recruiters didn't give a lot of info..I ask alot of questions...but it's all good I just sucked at lifting or I would have been here because I did like the fact that there were not a lot of bad reviews. And heck no nothing is for free anymore!! LMAO! It's kind of sad cuz I really did want to work here

    Bucktrucker Thanks this.
