Stay away from Prime! I've heard some terible things about them! Most companies don't require you to go to New York city, but New Jersey would be hard to get around! It is a major trucking port.
Schools are a good way to do it! I've heard that if you go to school with a company that you are basically stuck with them until you have paid for you schooling or you have to pay them back! With school there is financial aid and the possibility of grants!
Good luck to you! -
Look into your community college for a training class. Pellets grants and such that you might qualify for and classes only twice a week so you can adjust your work schedule. Lots of info on grants and community college classes in this forum. Just start searching. Good luck... don't quit trying to get somewhere better for yourself.

It's going to cost you one way or another to get the training.
The lesser of the two evils is to go to a technical college.
Either way, don't plan on an income for 4-6 weeks. 6-8 if you include the two weeks for payroll to kick in if you can get a job right out of the gate. -
OP posted thread 4/2011....
Somehow I think her decision has been made! -
Having talked to quite a few prime drivers over the years you are full of it. Hearsay is just that..hearsay. Training through prime is a step or two above the other driver mills. 6 weeks on a truck with a trainer vs 4. Multiple divisions and multiple kinds of freight.
The saying is..you can please all the people some of the time, some of the people all the time, but not all the people all the time and most of the people you talked to probably went lease operator without a solid business plan instead of company driver..their mistake.
