Hello everybody, I am new to the forum. I have been doing a lot of research about obtaining my CDL for awhile now, however I have been very nervous. I just turned 21 back in march. My dad has been a truck driver his entire life and has been pushing me so I finally applied to Millis, got accepted and will be paying for my spot in class on Monday.

From the information that I have read, a lot of it is old so I am wondering if anybody can give me some updated information and answer a few questions. Any help or pointers would be appreciated aswel.

As for my questions, some forum posts say you need to have your permit before you go to class? This has me concerned because I do not have my permit or anything yet I was accepted which has me leading to think that this may have changed and those were old requirements? If I am wrong somebody please let me know.

Also, older forum posts had also mentioned hotel rooms? I am fairly confident that they no longer offer a hotel for the 3 week period of class which is fine by me, my dad lives in okauchee, wi which isn't very far from richfield, wi so I will be staying there.

To my understanding, you are in a class room for 3 weeks? However, again from what I have read some say you are only really in the class for the first day then you're out in the yard backing and getting started in the truck right away which again has me concerned about not having a permit?

Those are my main concerns along with being 21 years old, so are there any other 21 year olds who have success stories or anybody for that matter who can give me any advice or information! Thanks!

well i was had just turned 22 when i went to the school in cartersville and i never had any problems. As for the permit you do have to have it by the time you go to school. To get your permit you have to go to your driver license place and take the written test. Once with a trainer they will take you for your driving test.

He "pushed" you? He didn't want you pursuing a different career? Did you want to be a trucker or did you actually wanted to do something else?

Haha, maybe I put that the wrong way. I have been waiting to for awhile however had to wait until I was 21. He pushed me into Millis, I was doing research with other companies but was nervous about making the right choice and putting in my 2 weeks with my current job. He just wanted me to quit being nervous and just do it already basically. I am very excited to have an opportunity to work for millis, everything I have read about them has been exactly what I wanted to see. My dad has been asking me questions about what I have found out about millis and he's even said certain things his company doesn't have as nice of things, like 2 weeks paid vacation after a year, he only got 1 week.

Anyways, sorry it was 5am when I wrote the initial post. I am very excited and this is something that I cannot wait to begin and experience. I have been wanting to drive for as long as I can remember, I've been in my dads truck several times. In fact, I've asked him to take me with him for a week before I start class just to get a feel of actually being out on the road. He goes from Wisconsin down to Florida every week pulling a Reefer. He's been sending me picture text messages of Millis trucks, haha.

You do have to have your permit. As Spanky mentioned you go to your DMV and take the written test. Unless they have changed it you are in the classroom the first week, or most of it anyway. Again, unless they have changed it they have hotels for you to stay in during school, if needed. This is not provided free, you pay for it and they payroll deduct it.

I hope this helps and good luck on your training.

Alright, so since you need to have your permit before you get to class which does make sense and is no problem at all. My question now is, how difficult is the written test. Do I need to really study the book I got from the DMV or is a lot of it common sense. My father and step-father both told me I would probably be able to go take the test without studying and do fairly well.

So I was considering going tomorrow morning to take it and see how I do then studying after that to see what I missed and what I need to learn? Also, as far as the DOT physical is that something that I do here locally or is there somebody who does it when I get down to richfield?

There are some sites for practice tests-- www.crist.com is a good one. If you have time read the manual first and take some sample tests to see if the questions make sense to you. Good luck

STUDY for your CDL permit!!! NO matter what any one else states. IF you do not not have it before getting accepteped to Millis, you will be in a pickle, sent home and/or disconconsidered (sp), or not even accepted. I have just completed Millis training on Friday, 01 Apr 2011, will be going to orintation (sp) on 04 Apr 2011, and getting with my trainer/driver about then, I hope.

Well I have 3 weeks until I got to class, I've taken a few practice permit tests online now and have done fairly well on all of them without even studying so I am not as worried anymore, I will probably go to the DMV this week at some point and see how it goes, I guess I will also call Millis tomorrow and see what I need to do about the DOT physical.
