I have a couple of these fridges that can plug into a cig lighter. Would using one of these to keep my stuff cold require me to always run the truck if there isn't an APU installed? Or should I see about getting a regular type fridge that can run off of 12 volts?

what amp. rating are they?....12volt fridges usally work well and you shouldnt need to idle the truck overnight....

Depending on which type of fridge you have, many have a low voltage cut-out that will automatically shut it off so that it won't kill your batteries. Usually these draw around 6 amps and should be just fine being left plugged in without killing your batteries as long as they're fully charged.

I heard that the "coolers" will cool 30 degrees below the ambient temp. So if your truck is 90 inside (or even 120 if left alone in summer sun) then perishables might spoil.
90F-30F = 60F which is above safe fridge temps for things like lunch meat, etc...

Ok, according to the back of the fridge, if I am plugged into 120 volts, it pulls 0.85 amps. On a 12 volt system, it pulls 5.4 amps. Also, pretty much the only thing I will be keeping in it are drinks like sodas or tea. More tea then anything since tea doesn't aggravate my acid reflux
