I just got my cobra 29 back from custom cb's, had it peaked, tuned and aligned and the rfx 75 upgrade done to it, i'm looking forward to useing it!
I like to be able to be heard at a distance, many of the places I drive thru it's a blessing to be able to warn other drivers of any issues you might run into and it helps when your trying to get directions around accidents or bad weather.

All I got was a bunch of crap from some of you here before I even got my 29 back with the RFX75. Crap like "I'd sure like to see what kind of crappy noise that looks like on a scope" so save the "I don't care what you run as long as it sounds good" BS. Mine was set up right, sounds good, is at 100% modulation, and not one person has said "boy that sounds like crap" yet some of you here will bash those RFX75s to your pitiful graves and I just can't help but wonder why?
Now I'll briefly talk about some crappy sounding noise and that's having to put up with your BS skip on my radio day after day. Enough to make me want to shut the #### thing off more times that I can count. I can't even talk to another truck a mile up the road at times cuz I have to squelch up so #### high I might as well shut it off.
And this is acceptable like some sort of great accomplishment? Please tell me that ideal conditions for this noise is almost over cuz I find it the most annoying thing of turning my radio on every day.
How's that for a description of just plain noise? Wonder what it looks like on a scope come to think of it.
Sorry just had to vent on what I call noise and have to deal with every day by the time afternoon rolls around.Nodnarc Thanks this. -
The scope photos someone posted are a radio that is FLAT TOPPING ....
Yep that would sound like CRAP ..... Also a spectrum scope would show how much trash it is putting out and I would like to see that too ....
As for RXF75's I'm waiting to see them installed on REAL 10 meter radios with FCC certification .... -
When I had my 29 RFX cobra tested for output the local tech was amazed it would peak at 122 watts, He usually charges $10.00 but on the bet it would actually do 120 he done it for free. He then wanted to see what it looked like on his scope so he done that also, It looked similar to the one posted besides the tops were much more tapered, Not quite to a point but similar to the back edge of a set of fingernail clippers. His words " I'll be damed that's actuall pretty decent" Just for the heck of it I will take my radio back and snap a few pictures while he is checking it. Mine is actually the Cobra 29 Black Chrome Stealth 2 Competition Radio Built by Doug and a standard RFX 29 may show differently. Here is a small summary of what has been done. "This radio does not have Echo and has never been built buy anyone else...ever. This radio has... * RFX-75 Replacement Final Section Over 100 watts of swing!! * Switchable High/Low Power * Swing Kit for max modulation * I have replaced 5 different caps to improve the performance of the Audio and Transmit * I upgraded the cap at the power input of the radio to help with noise * I gave the radio my receive upgrade that gives you a 30% increase in receive. * This radio is very sensitive on receive you will just be amazed at what you can hear with this radio. This radio is made to run your big amp (4 pill or more) and will sound fantastic. Most of the time you don't need a driver with this radio. If it did not say Cobra on the front you would not know it was one. Just so you know... I like to build radios and it is my reputation on the line when I build them."

Do you kow what Doug set the dead key at on yours? I am betting around 6 or 7. I seen people running as high as 15 and the radio burnging up.

Some people will bash anything that takes a factory 4 watt radio and makes it talk with over 100 watts of performance. It is the same with 10 meter converts. They talk trash about them because it will do more then what is allowed on 11 meter. As long as the radio sounds good to others then who cares.
I have a non RFX cobra 29 "Stealth" done by Doug (customcbradios) when he was doing radios for Sparky. I get alot of compliments on that radio.
Currently running a converted 10 meter Connex 4600 Turbo that get nothing but compliments everytime I key up and talk. It keys up less then 50 watts and does over 200 watts pep. Just the other day I was on it chatting with one of our drivers as we ran ND highway 2 in northern ND. Some one from Florida came on and gave me compliments "Roses" on my radio. I have easily talked all over the country and then some with that connex, when the conditions are working. Locally it easily gets out over 20 miles with crystal clear audio that is loud enough that people think I am sitting in the cab with them talking loudly. I have actually had some of our drivers call me on the phone asking were I was, They could hear me lound and clear but could not get me to reply back. The farthest one out was just over 35 miles judging from the mile markers. Them are days when skip is not taking over the airwaves causing alot of noise.
Sometimes I like when skip is rolling as I can talk all over the country but for the most part it kills the longer local transmissions since there is so much noise. Somedays it gets so bad that you can not comunicate more then a mile or two unless the other driver has a little more power to get over all the extra noise. This is when the RFX equiped radios and higher powered 10 meter radios come into play.
I fully understand that 4 watts is usually more then enough to get the job done so there should be no need for the extra umph or punch of the RFX or 10 meter converts, but until EVERYONE reverts back to a legal 4 watts then the extra power is needed when conditions get real cluttered.
This is one reason why I would like to see GMRS etc become more available with hard mounted mobil rigs running off the vehicles power with remote antennas instead of just the hand held units. They have litterally 100s of channels to beable to be used. Think about it a bit. These little handhelds can get out up to 25-30 miles, you can always find a quiet channel and they only have a 5 inch long antenna. All for less then 80 dollars for a pack of two which also includes chargers and Vox head gear.
I am dreaming again I quess. -
Tell me more about this receive upgrade you talk about. I was going to have Paul at Bells do one to mine he advertises but he said it wasn't worth it and would bring in more noise than anything so I didn't do it. That's the one place I would like to improve a little is my receive.
Thanks... -
usmc041127, I have a switchable high/low power, In CB mode it DK's 2 watts and swings to 120-122 depending on meter used, In PA position it DK's 12 watts and goes from there, Never tested max watts in this position but I will.
deerslayer1143, I really don't know what was involved in the recieve upgrade but I can say IT WORKS! I believe WA4GCH has done this mod to other radios and may offer some help. If if helps at all I keep switching back between Doug's Cobra 29 and Sparkys Magnus S9-175 because I just can't decide what one I like better for A.M. use. I'm sure with that statement I just lost any credability I may have had but in reality they are so close in transmit and recieve very few people I talk with can tell the difference when I switch them out and talk back to back on them.Last edited: Apr 10, 2011
deerslayer1143 Thanks this. -
Something I could possibly do myself?
I'm not sure what was involved in his receive mod either. Just figured if he said it wasn't worth it, it probably wasn't. -
I actually ordered an RFX75 sitting here and the instructions call for carrier watts of 15 max. That is assuming you're running bareback of course in which case you'd want it much lower if running an amp. Even tells you what you need to do to lower it or raise it if it's too low.
I threw my meter on my 29WXNWBT done at Bells and it's right at 15 tho he said it was at 18.
Correct me if I'm wrong but having a very low DK and swinging to extremely high numbers is when one runs into noise problems? (i.e. distortion)
