Speed limit changes are tied to the Main core maps and when the map update is available then you will be able to see the corrected speed limit changes.

1. You should reboot the TND about every 2 days.

2. Any Navigation device as you zoom out shows less road because now you have more in place at the greater distance. So lesser important roads like state routes are not available at the higher zoom levels.

3. Need the serial number off the back of the TND.

4. You should see the low power indicator at 5 minutes. If not, then you are not on the latest version of "1808".

5. Multi-stops are in the next version.

6. Rand adds new features that are requested by you the driver, plus other issues that affects any type of routing or the operation of the TND.

My husband has a TND 500, which he has had for a while and is quite happy with. After some issues with incorrect files, etc it updated correctly with my old crappy computer system. I recently purchased a new fast and fancy ACER Aspire M3910 which has an intel i7 CPU. My computer will not recognize my TND on any of the USB ports. I called TND, who advised that the new i7 CPU's do not provide enough power to the USB ports to allow them to connect the the TND devices ???

I am searching for a solution as I cannot keep the old computer system, just to update this TND device. Any advise would be very much appreciated.

 

Get a powered USB port expander - it will have a wall-socket plug-in unit for the internal power supply. BestBuy and Radio Shack have them. Not too sure about Office Depot or Office Max.

 

My computer does not recognize my TND:
There are several things you can try:
1) Be patient! This can sometimes take a couple of minutes the first time
2) Restart your computer
3) Try a different USB port
4) Try plugging the device into a different computer (if you have one) Also, some computers may have trouble recognizing the TND unit especiallyif the computer has a modern power-efficient processor. If this is the case, using a powered USB hub usually resolves this issue.

I thought that having a modern power-efficient processor is a good thing as the whole world is going to more efficient power usage. ACER is a huge company and produce millions of computers - both desktops and laptops that incorporate more efficient power usage. I would assume other computer companies are going the same way with their computers.

Wouldn't Rand McNally support power-efficiency in their devices?

Does everyone who buys a new computer need to purchase a powered USB HUB to continue using their TND devices?

 

Acer isn't exactly one of the better brand names for laptops - its not about "power efficiency" as much as its about "cheap." And the corporate bottom line. Since there's only one input port on the TND device, they have to support serial communications and power input on one connector.

But hey! As long as it works, its not a big deal. The USB expansion port isn't an expensive item... you just need to get something to push some electricity into the TND500.

Not simply shut it off, but an actual reboot? It will slow down well before 2 days.

I agree but the TND seems far worse than other makes. For example, if you have it on state view go to Iowa it will not draw I-380 until you zoom in. Sometimes in Canada it will draw absolutely nothing. You have a blank screen, you have to guess where the highways are.

Will do, I seem to recall someone else having the same problem.

Another thing that I forgot to add to my original message is:

When viewing your route, other GPS units will actually show you where the turns/stay left or right/merges etc.. that are in the direction screen. Usually it will be a big white arrow superimposed over the route line.

 

I am forwarding this up to Rand Support again. Please send me your name and address in an E-Mail. They have a 1.1 blue USB hub that will allow your TND to communcate with the laptop. I have tested on i5 processors and it works fine.
