not usually, but like others have said, I'll use my judgement.

there was one guy, couldn't have been more than 20 sitting outside a subway restaurant a few years ago with a sign that read" verbally abuse me for $$". I said what the F--- is this?? can't you work? you have clean clothes, you wear glasses, someone takes care of you! he said that he was on welfare, and had an apartment he shared with 3 other people, but had literally no money. I said go work at wal-mart, i'll drive you there right now. he said he had a hard time adhering to a schedule because he's bipolar and can't get himself out of bed in the morning. he said he was trying to make some money to get back home to his parents, about a $125 bus ticket away. I said lets go right now across the street to grayhound and i'll get you off the #### street TODAY. I'll also give the driver (a friend of mine) $100 to buy him food along the way. he asked if I could just give him the money because he has to get his stuff and that way he could book the trip and go when he was ready. I said buddy, you are on the street begging for money in exchange for your pride so you can get home, what do you have to bring - you ARE ready to go home. he declined, and then said he'd be ready to go home tomorrow.

the next day i showed up and there he was with his sign. I asked him if he was ready to go home, and he gave some b.s. excuse as to why he wasnt. I said "look, i will go across the street right now, and buy you the bus ticket. you are begging for money to get yourself home, I will get you home, don't you want to skip this degrading step?!?!" he started to stammer and then his blackberry rang. he looked embarassed and i was ready to kick the S$#! out of him. didn't see him again. glad i never gave him a dime.
