Good to know, Yeah i just went and looked at that truck school today, he said they are certified and the course is 160 hours, price is 1500 and they have job placement for about 20 major companies. I want to get my hazmat also but he said you have to be 21 for that. I was thinking about taking the school this summer but i would have to go back after i turn 21 in october to get my hazmat so im thinking now it might be best to wait until after i graduate college next May, then go through the school full time so im done in 4-5 weeks so i can get my hazmat then and then have them help me find an OTR job.

ya wait until just before you turn 21, try to plan it so you finish school a week after you turn 21 that way you can go right to work. Allot of companies will not touch you once youve been out of school for 30 or more days they will make you go back to school again lol

Yeah well i turn 21 october 1st but i won't graduate from college until May 2012, so i'll probably end up waiting until after i graduate college in May then start trucking school so i would be able to apply for companies and go straight to work once i get my CDL. Does watkins shepard only hire experienced drivers or would they take me if i just got my cdl?
-
they will hire you right out of school, just check to make sure they hire out of that school, their picky about schools.

ok yeah it's kinda hard to pick a school that everyone will accept. I know the one i want to attend is an accredited truck school and like i said are approved by a lot of big companies like werner, swift, covenant, central refrigerated,Usxpress....i think im going to go with that school mainly because of all the different companys i can get hired on with. Even if the company doesnt have a great record, at least i will get some experience..

I've been driving for 25 years, my Son just got into it because of the economy.
You do need to get your CDL first.
My Son went to school in South Bend, IN. Since we paid cash we got a 1000 dollar discount, Cost? 4,900 bucks. If you went thru their loan process it cost another 1000 plus 20% interest.
Borrow the money from family or a bank.
His first day, he took his Drug Test and Physical, after the first week of studying they took them for their permits.
2 weeks more in the truck training and you take the road test for your CDL.
Once you have your CDL, then you call Schneider and go thru their program which starts out with another drug test, a week in green bay and a few weeks with a trainer on the road.
Schneider will pay the money spent for the original TD School a little every month.
Schneider is one of the best Companies for New Drivers to start with. The Equipment is well maintained and the pay isnt to bad either. -
Yeah thanks a lot for the info I found a local school here that does it for 1,500 so I should be able to save that much before next year hopefully and I talked to a guy today who used to be a trucker and told me that the scariest time in his life was goin down an icy mountain and missing a gear and barely able to save the truck...didn't exactly put my mind at ease haha

Well you don't want to be shifting gears coming down a steep grade, you always make sure you're in the right gear before you start down that grade. A good rule of thumb is you go down the grade in the same gear you went up the grade in. With over 2 million miles under my belt, I've had some pretty intense moments but missing a gear going down a grade wasn't one of them.

Being the complete newbie that I am (and still being in CDL school) I was taught that you should be in a lower gear going down than you were going up...?
