I have always been interested in life on the road. I've traveled to many different countries as a kid but would certainly like to do more of that as an adult. The last place I went was Ireland in 03' and it was amazing to say the least.
Just recently I moved to the east coast from California and it was my first cross country road trip and what a great time! I got to thinking about the trucking industry and it made me curious about the ins and outs of a trucker's life. There are so many interesting posts and viewpoints on here which is just my cup of tea.
So I'm looking for new friends and if anyone shares the same interests, it would be great to chatI'm a film fan so some of my favorites have to do with adventure such as "One Week" and "Into The Wild". This is an amazing country with much to offer, I'm curious about traveling around Canada at some point as well. Would love to hear if anyone has some great stories.
Thanks for creating a great site and I look forward to making everyone's acquaintance on here-Becca

Into the Wild. Awesome.
I'm new as well. I'm in Phoenix and about to embark on classes through AIT... planning to be solo by July.
I think you'll enjoy the reads on here. I was overly skeptical at first, but the realistic takes on things and how good work ethic and common sense will get you places really helps me out.
Are you planning to do some OTR or just get your CDL or what?
Cheers,
Smaggs

Well Smaggs, apparently you're a fan of good movies
I'm not planning on being a truck driver, my interest lies in film production. I'd love to do a doc on truckers someday. I think it's a world not a lot of people know about. It's also a profession many want to get into but may be undecided. It would be cool to show what it's really all about.
What made you decide to get into it?

"A world not many people know about?"
Ain't that the truth.
"I'm not planning on being a truck driver"
Smart move!!! I wouldn't encourage anybody to enter trucking.
That said: Trucking does get in your blood so to speak, it's like an addiction, it gives the illusion of freedom.
Truth be told, it's the hardest job I've ever done.
Truth be told, I've tried to go back to a regular 9-5 job and have always come back to trucking.
The illusion is you don't have anyone looking over your shoulder, but you do in spades!!!
It's the toughest job youll ever do but, it gets into you blood, can't explain it, but it does and if you try to return to your 9-5 you'll be left feeling empty.
I'm Jake, been pulling tankers for 25 years.
Take Care

Welcome bbwfire to this addicting website. Btw did you say you wanna play "doctor" with truckers some day...... or did i read it wrong ?
Noggin Thanks this. -
Hey Jake,
Glad to make your acquaintance
I had a friend in California who couldn't get the job he wanted and then went to a desk job. I figured there had to be a middle ground for him somewhere. Then he called me up one day and said he wanted to be a truck driver. From what I gather thus far, I certainly don't think he's cut out for it. I love the guy, but he claims he doesn't care if he ever leaves California, he loves the comforts of home and likes his solitude. That sounded completely contradictory to the lifestyle he would be getting into as far as I understood it. And by solitude, he likes being inside his physical house most of the time. He's a horse of a different color, unlike any of my other friends and I have them from all over the country. I didn't tell him not to give it a try because sometimes you have to experience something to truly know if you want it or not.
I appreciate what you had to say and you've been doing this for quite a long time. I also can connect with the fact that the 9-5 would be so difficult after experiencing a life on the road. I myself still have my gripes with the desk job, but I'm hoping to do weekend volunteer work, with an environmental organization, The Sierra Club or maybe Habitat for Humanity to get me in touch with my outdoorsy side. I'm a big nature fan and I got to take in quite a bit of it on my cross country road trip when moving to the east coast. I can see that there are pro's and cons to what you do as there are to everything. Thanks for you input Jake! Hugs - Fire -
Ooooh, that was a smooth move Dave. Love how tried to slide that one under the door.
You know I'd really love to hear any interesting stories you've had on the road. Especially since you guys have been at this for so long. When I was in high school, my friend lived in this really ritzy neighborhood and they had an RV parked outside the front of their house for when they took the family camping (I prefer tents but that's just me) and they had a radio. My friend Jaime got on the radio and heard a trucker talking about lot lizards. We had no idea what they were talking about, lol. Finally she asked somebody. I'm wondering how often you guys get approached that way or is that a thing of the past in the industry? Also, what do you guys think of the benefits for truckers, healthcare and such? Is all of that included in the job? -Fire
