I am thinking buy a new truck, really like freightliner coronado, but international prostar is attractive also because of cheaper and fuel efficiency, I like volvo 630 also, but the quality of the brand is big headache. any tank owner operator can give me some suggestions? such as truck model ,horse power, engine( l like cummins) etc?? I pay more attention on the truck's fuel mileage and comfortabilit y and safety.

right now I own a freightliner fld, almost million miles, but running good, horse power 430, with automatic transmission. Do i sell it or trade in with dealer?

    any suggestion is appreciated.

I haul a gas tanker. I like KW with a Cummins. I would read every thread on this board about Volvo, Freightliner and Prostar before I bought one. Then I would go test drive the ones your still interested in. My guess is after driving a KW you won't even be interested in the others.

FYI : You need to watch your tare weight on what you buy or you won't get hired. One example comes to mind, a Western Star. A fine unit with great looks but shunned by most tanker outfits because of weight. It's all about payload plus remember you'll be adding pump, compressor and hose rack to the tare. That could be another 500 plus lbs.

If possible I would sell the FLD outright. The dealer is going to steal it from you OR don't tell him about the FLD until you have your best price for the new one...then show it to him, that way he can't fluff the numbers to hide the truck.

And I agree with the other o/p, KW is sweet......

    Good hunting...

I have ran chemical tankers for 2yrs now. If the FLD is not a condo then you might want to think about keeping it. Especially if its paid off. That way, if you decide running tanker isn't for you, then u won't have a huge payment with uncertainty. That being said....

If you are going to buy a new truck, I'd stick to a Pete or KW with a flat top or midroof. NO CONDO'S! Most all tanker companies have tractor height requirements. As for weight, I know at QC we have plenty of western stars and other trucks over 22,000lbs and weight wasn't an issue.

As for specs, is say 475hp and 3.55 rears at the minimum. I prefer a 13spd but running liquid is sometimes a pain. I'd seriously thing about an automatic trans, they make the surge effect basically null and you will never miss a gear going up or down a hill.

tankers are much heavier boxes ore tint trailers, that's why you need a truck with engine with good low end torque. All European engines and DT15 are with limited low end torque to save fuel. so seems to me ISX would be better for you. and Cat, if it may be available...

Do you look for new truck ore used, but newer?
