Golden Valley Fire Chief Tom O'Donohue said the only thing keeping a semi-truck from crashing into bridge support pillars after it left the road Thursday afternoon was a guardrail. O'Donohue said the tractor-trailer, which was carrying drink mix, drove off Interstate 40 under Griffith Road Bridge just before 5 p.m., damaging about 50 feet of guardrail before coming to a stop. "Had it not been for the guardrail, the semi would have smashed directly into the bridge support pillars," he said. The Department of Public Safety said the truck driver was cited for failure to maintain control of his vehicle to avoid a collision.
