could be a bad jakebrake switch on the back of injection pump. when they go bad it will turn on jake when you try to give it fuel. turn off the main jake switch on the dash and it should stop it.

Broken exhaust valve bridge pin, If I was really guessing I would say #5.
Do a complete valve set and look.

Found return line from injector pump blocked off. They had switched to one tank and never ran return to the tank.Ran truck for about 2000 miles. What damage could this have caused to fuel pump or lift pump having no return?

A "B" model has a very low amount of fuel return an it is a bleed line to keep air out of the pump fuel galley in the pump, it will not cause a popping it may cause a misfire if the system is compromised and sucking air.
It is not uncommon to have the #4 hose swell and plug off flow or even the restrictor to be plugged.
    Never seen that damage anything.

Fixed return line, adjusted valves, checked pump timing everything checked.Fuel pressure is between 40 and 45 psi. When you goose the the throttle you get your normal puff of black smoke but if you hold the rpm up around 1700 and goose it a couple of times but don't let it drop below 1700 between gooses than let it come back down to idle and goose it again no black smoke at all no matter how many times you goose it and engine seemes flat idles fine when you goose it it increases in rpm doesn't miss or anything just not getting the fuel delivery.Shut the engine off and let it sit for a minute start the truck up goose it we get the black smoke puff.Could the governor weights be hanging up and limiting my fuel travel.Has a brand new lift pump, have a bubble gauage installed on the suction side from tank,no bubbles and not starving for fuel. You have to shut engine off in order for what ever is causing the pump to do this to reset.
