Good evening to all who are in training and those who are thinking about getting into the trucking biz.
As I'm sure you have all found out, it is virtually impossible these days to get a CDL or a job in the trucking industry without going to some type of CDL training school.
Something to think about is AFTER you complete school (which I might add only gives you what you NEED to get out there) is your time with a trainer. In my time as an instructor as well as a driver trainer on the road prior to that, I can say that most trainers I know have certain rules that they expect to be followed while in training with them. Let's touch on a couple.
First) Let me say that I do understand that not ALL personalities are a match and IF that is the case then you simply discuss it like human beings and and make arrangements to get another trainer.
Second) YOU the student MUST remember that YOU are a guest in your trainers truck. This is where HE/SHE makes HIS/HER living and they are VOLUNTARILY giving their time and letting you in their home away from home so as to help you become a skilled driver and be an asset to the company you are working for. Yes they get paid for it however they did VOLUNTEER for the job.
Third) THE RULES..... they ALL have them and YOU must abide by them or problems begin. Some of the simple ones are....no shoes in the bedroom, keep the mirrors clean, keep items off the dash, things like that.
Then there are more important ones such as keeping the truck at the posted speed limit wherever you are, planning for everything you are doing in the truck, and one of the biggest has to do with those cell phones!!! MOST company policies are that you shouldn't even have those things within arms reach while you're driving especially a student for cryin' out loud!!!!
This is where I get into trouble.....IN MY HUMBLE OPINION....you as students aren't near as good as you think you are and wanting to look at your phones and talk on them while you are in training and behind the wheel......BS!!!!
NOW lets get down to the real business at hand....Millis policy....under no circumstance should a student be allowed to use, look at,play with, caress, think about caressing, smell, fondle,or in any way use his/her cell phone,laptop,e-reader,smartphone or dumbphone while said individual is behind the wheel of a Millis truck!!!
There are enough distractions out there already without you trying to carry on a conversation with someone you could call when you stopped.
This is an issue that is a very sore subject to most trucking companies due to the many accidents that have occured because of cell phone use and it is an issue with trainers as well because it is taking your mind off of the task at hand....which SHOULD be driving that truck safely and keeping you AND your trainer alive!!!
Ladies and gentlemen, if you can't follow the rules( however small the rule may be) while you are brand new and in training, what makes you think a company will keep you around when they find that out.
THINK about it people....it might just save your job and your life!!!!

Thanks for the post MrG! You truly are an asset to us students & trainees. I started driver school today with Ed in Richfield. He appears to have a wealth of knowledge willing to share.

LMAO!! This wasn't mentioned in school...

I think it falls back to basic: education, respect and eager to learn.
Totally agree with what you said! -
Doesn't matter if you have 20 days or 20 years behind the wheel...when you're driving...that is exactly what you do....drive. And it doesn't matter if you have 4 wheels or 18 wheels. There are enough distractions out there as it is.nascarchuck Thanks this.

MrG,
Got a question. Is there a regional route that includes Texas? Heard there may be, so thought I'd try to find any info. Thanks, for any help on the matter! -
Yes, mostly hauling glass from waco to ft. Worth, 5 day work week usually

Old Boar, Ryeman is correct. It is basically a dedicated run keeping the brewery supplied with glass bottles from Waco. When you get finished with class, ask about getting on it if you're interested. Please don't quote me on this but I think those guys are home every night, if not, I'm sure they get there a couple nights a week. I've done orientation for a few of the guys that are doing it.
