I have had my Class A with all endorsements except Haz-Mat since I retired from the Military in 2003.
I drove a school bus for awhile but other then the Military and growing up driving big farm equipment I have no experience that would translate.
My wife used to drive for Prime which is why I am looking at them to drive for.
The first recruiter told me they do not except new drivers.
After seeing the training school on their website I called back and got a better recruiter who took my info and actually took some time to talk to me.
However I still have questions and since I am currently in Belgium maybe I can get the answers through here.
My wife and I want to drive as a team with a lease truck and I am just curious what I need to do to get hired?
I am willing to start over or take a refresher class or whatever is needed.
As a rated vet the VA will pay for retraining.
I am looking to see about trying to work sometime in Aug after we move from Anchorage to the Portland area.
Being gone is no big thing as I currently spend twenty days a month flying and loading 747s out of the country anyways.
I want a job where I can still travel and see the country without being couped up on a aircraft.
I have a clean driving record and good health.
I have a background in logistics and schooling in that area as well.
So does anyone have a clue as to what I need to do to have a chance at getting hired by prime and is it as good of company to work for as my wife remembers?
Thanks!

Herkloader?? Nice name--I'll guess a former C-130 load master. I was stationed at Pope and Yokota on the mighty Herk--great airplane. Good luck on your search.

Yep I did 23 yrs on the Herk. Slicks,Rescue and Gunpigs.
I avoided the big three assignments except for instructor school and Dyess at the end.Dyess does not count though as I spent 2 straight years deployed to the Sandbox from there before I retired.
I see a lot of former Loads are happy driving trucks after they retire. -
I can only tell you that I spoke with Prime a couple months ago. I, like you, have a class A CDL but no verifiable recent class A experience. The Prime recruiter told me that I needed to go to DMV, turn in my CDL, get a standard drivers license. Then Prime would "consider" me. If they approved me, I would then go to their school. I would have to get a permit in MO, go through their school, get a MO license, return to my home and transfer the CDL to my home state.
I saw no sense in this foolishness. Nobody could explain why this would be beneficial to me, or Prime for that matter. Prime was on my shortlist, but they seemed to have no interest in me. I found other employment. Their loss.
If the VA wants to pay for your school, you would probably be better off finding a good school and letting the VA cover it. This way you have the freedom to seek employment anywhere.
