in my mid fourties...just got a class 1 for a career change....
perfect driving record, no criminal record, willing to go out for a month at a time, willing to join a team, will pass drug and alcohol test, valid passport and able to cross the border and i live in alberta where lots of companies are hiring
.....but no one will even meet with me for a interview because i have no experience. full stop, thats it, game over
finding it hard to believe thats there's no apprenticeship program or entry level position that you can work up from. might partly explain the driver shortage i keep reading about
just wanted to vent
new driver/no job for you!

I already have my Class A CDL but no T/T or OTR experience. There are plenty of companies that talked to me and I decided that Stevens Transport would probably be my best fit.
Some of the "training" companies are:
Stevens Transport
FFE
CR England
Werner
Swift
Knight
Pam
Schneider
JB Hunt
Millis
Prime (although they said I couldnt work there since I already had my CDL but less than 3 months experience.)
There are more but those are the ones that come to mind at the moment. Do your research on them. -
F
Isn't Alberta in Canada? Not sure if your suggestion applies to him. -
Your right. I didnt see his location in his message. I looked in his information on the right side and it didnt say where he was from there.
-
have you tried getting a job in the oil patch?
i find it very hard to believe that in alberta you cant get a job driving -
yeah im finding it hard to believe that i cant get a driving job in alberta to
all i hear is "get back to us as soon as you have some experience"....catch 22
i understand that no one wants a greener in their truck but it defies logic that there isn't some way to get in at the ground floor and work your way up like there is in every other trade
just having a little rant...not having any money coming in gets inside your head
-
Hey man, not having any money coming in is a bad thing. Keep on lookin man, you will find a job if you keep your head up. Visit in person telling them that you are here to work and not play around. Basically ask for a chance and in return you won't let them down. You've most likely done this, just venting because it make's me mad when people say "Oh you have no experience"... Hell I had no experience throwing 1800 piece trucks by myself, they denied department moves for me. But the one time they needed some one, I stepped in and showed everyone of their current Team members up by doing a unload quicker then any one of them.
Sorry...ranting...just makes me mad. But like I said man, keep your head up, a opportunity will come along. Best of luck. -
I live in Alberta aswell,
I know alot of guys who are green as grass and get picked up by companies in Alberta right away...all the time
anything they told you about trucking in driving school is crap...
I have been around lots of fresh driving school grad's and I shake my head...with the amount of false stuff they say or teach in those schools..
you can't expect to come into the driving industry and have all the gravy and top pay, right off the hop.
you have to start at the bottom and cut your teeth and get your experience.
So it all depends on you and what you are looking too do.
but remember the first job ISN'T going to be what YOU really want to do.
My bro got into trucking 3-4 years ago and expected to make the kind of money I was and I had 15 years experience at the time. working hauling in the patch. he learned REAL fast you have to take whatever driving job to get your experience and now he landed a good paying gig after he got his experience -
Try Schlumberger and Sanjel. Right now the oil and gas is a bit slow with the spring bans on but end of next month things should pick up.
-
You could do worse than Manitoulin. Last I heard, their rate for new grads was 45cpm. Walk into Rainbow's yard in Edmonton and ask for their training department.
