To be willing to gain .2 mpg and tradeoff safety in wet/snow conditions is nuts. Big fleets are doing this because they compromise safety in ANY other way anyway. This winter I had to swerve really hard to avoid hitting bouncing pickup truck driven by some moron who lost control. We were driving on fresh, pure black ice. I will never know what saved me from jacknife that night but I know what IT COULD BE - 8 brand new XDN2 drive tires and spread axle under the trailer.
You still want to save a bit fuel and loose your job, 200k truck/trailer and kill someone? You are nuts![]()
Highway ribs on drive axles?

I am getting a set of 8 M726EL on the trick now as we speak. They are giving me $200 a tire credit for the brand new off road lugs I'm taking off.
I was going to get the M720 but nobody had 8 and the XDA-Energy is an extra $100 a tire.
I run Chicago to Corpus Christi weekly year round with a super light tank so I need as much traction as I can get in the winter. -
Too bad you couldn't have got either of the other 2 sets. Lots better in the rolling resistance dept.
The M726EL have the same rolling resistance rating as my DR444 drives. Even though they are a closed shoulder tread they still have HUGE tread blocks. Which didnt seem to help me too much this past winter. I do run NW all the time, and I doubt anybody in the US had to chain more than me this past winter LOL. Mine are also plenty noisy, hopefully yours are a tad more quiet. -
You seem to be under influence of Kevin Rutherford and his "rolling resistance" drivel. There is a reason why he and his senseless theories attract rookie drivers - and the reason is lack of experience
-
Well, the tires I just removed had a rr of 197! They were oil field luggers, and my last set of 726's lasted 5yrs and about 400k miles so I think I will be better off as I don't full any weight (heaviest load on my run is 4500lbs) and I got them for $285 a tire at the TA with our national account so it is well worth it to me
Nitropickup Thanks this. -
Michelin has some closed shoulder lugs that have pretty good rolling resistance #s.

Oh boy, another super trucker has his say. You tell me the answer, or are you here just for the insults?
I don't buy into the airtabs and that other fuel line snake oil crap, not one bit. But, he has my attention on the tire thing. Unless you can prove him wrong. Go for it...
BTW, sounds like you're listening to him too huh lol???? -
Yeah, I do listen to him because there is nothing else to listen to on the sat radio. The RR difference between tires is smaller than he and Michelin claims. It's not worth the traction, you and him are just rookies who don't know much about driving. Sometimes it takes milions miles to get into that bad situation from the worst dreams and none of the "RR cult" were near to it. Yet. But when it happen and you will kill somebody - this .2 mpg will haunt you till your last day.
Besides, I don't believe its .2 mpg. It's much less than that -
I used to run an all position tire on my drives way back in the early eighties but found out you only have 19/32 for rubber which dont last as long compare to a drive tire with 28/32, or 30/32, and even 32/32. I deliver to many construction sites and sometimes you need the traction, I prefer a close shoulder, there quieter on the road.
Kansas Thanks this. -
All you've done to this point is to throw out your opinion, and brag about how much you know. Do you have any actual facts to present? Otherwise you come off as just another blow hard who has managed to sign up for an internet account? No great achievement.
I will continue to side the experts at Michelin and the guy who has managed to rise up to have his own national radio show. At least until somebody can offer me a more reasonable explanation.
Last chance for you chief. Do you have any facts to share? Otherwise you're just wasting my time, and I might as well put you on ignore.dwmac71 Thanks this.
