Do any of you run APRS in your trucks? I used to run it in my POV and at the house. I was thinking about buying the Kenwood TMD 710 and setting it up in the truck when I get one. Then my son can keep track of where I am.

If I ever get a few bucks ahead, I would like to buy a D-STAR radio and get into APRS one of these days...

I have a Icom-880H But only a 2mtr antenna When I go to Dayton this year I will Get a 2mtr-440 combo. Have not tried Aprs Yet. And with Echolink I can still stay in contact with my local repeater group on my cell phone or laptop.

    engine312 Thanks this.

Does Echolink use up a lot of air time? I just bought a netbook and the 5gb air plan. I think I should be able to use echolink to talk to my kids. All 5 of them are licensed hams.

I not sure about the mb usage but echolink is a great medium that is great to use instead of having to install a HF rig. DSTAR also works along those lines but also has access to be able to scan 100 to 999 I work with fema also and use this feature to monitor our freq while out and about. See you at Dayton!

Im just getting into amateur radio. Havent got my tech lic yet but will the next test date in my area is fast approaching :) My question is where are you running your power from? Are you connecting directly to the battery? My Icom manual says thats a no no for big trucks? I drive a KW T600 so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also whats the best place to mount the antenna? Will my 2m do fine on the mirror mount? Once again thanks.

I would go to the fuse block and as for the antenna a comet lip mount would work great on your rain gutter or the sun shield. Hope this gives you some ideas.

The only problem that I am running into with dstar is that there are not enough repeaters around to be able to link in to. Also the range is very short. The dstar groups are holding classes around the country look them up on google.
