Hey gents, i am a 26 year old truck driver in southern California. i constantly see guys driving, what seems to be, their own truck pulling bottom dumps. I want in. How do i start? the only thing i know i have to do, is get a truck and a set of bottom dumps. I am tired of making minimal money for working like a dog. ANY AND ALL FEEDBACK WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!

You gotta have money for equipment and contacts to haul for. Belly dumping isn't that hard of work.

get with a good company is all I can say .Being a op is a pain in my butt .You have taxes out the you know where and you get no breaks on it .also companies tend to make mistakes and cause you not to receive a check in 8 weeks that's been my case anyway .

There is nothing to say that you'll bring home much more than that working for yourself. Its just the facts with what a guy gets paid and what expenses takes out.

Start saving every thing you can for down payment and running expenses until the money starts to come in. In the mean time visit with every body you can find in the area that is already doing it. Find out every thing they can tell you. From where to get your load contacts, what to expect for revenue, what to expect for expenses, what kind of hrs to expect you'll be working etc etc.

I understand the self employed language. I've been there and done that. Currently not and its tough working for some one else when you are used to making all the decisions.

I own my truck free and clear .Had a flatbed to but it was stolen .The thing is getting your own road rights is pretty cheap but insurance will break you . You'll need more than contracts .You need a good tireman that will cut you a deal and a good mechanic that will let you make payments if necessary if you are slow and you gotta breakdown .If you like oversized loads how about paying the escorts and all the permits you need .Leasing to a good company with a great dispatcher who can have you a load and back haul set up in minutes is pretty good money .look at all options that are available because I've made my share of mistakes .My biggest was trusting folks to much and it can ruin you if your not careful .
