I drive a 2009 prostar and I have just put a new cb in the truck. The factory antenna cable that comes out of the top of the mirror is broken so I had to buy a new cable. I have a KN metal antenna. (the big fancy one that says 20,000 watts. lol) was 70 dollars, on sale at Pilot for $49.99. I ran the cable through the door jam for the time being. (It is shut in the door).
99 percent of the time, when I key the mic, the antenna light comes on the cb showing no signal. I currently have a 9foot mini cable. Kinda tan/goldish in color. $22
My dilemma is this, how can I run the cable without tearing apart the dash or door to extensively and get rid of the "road noise" or the whinning noise that comes through the speaker when I roll the power window up or down?
I have never ran my own cable in a big truck. Is there somewhere in the overhead compartments that would have a hole big enough to feed the cable through?
If anyone has any ideas or knowledge of how I can do this, please help. ( the prices are just to help maybe identify the parts, I'm not in the truck at the moment and dont remember that exact name of the manufactures)Thanks.

If the antenna light comes on, folow instructions on antenna package to see if antenna needs trimmed. Make sure all connections are correct and tight. You may have to run a direct hot wire between fuse box and cb to avoid static when running windows and such.

The cable is run thru the door, if you don't want it to show then that's how you'll have to route it, is this your truck or a company truck? If it's a company truck have your shop replace the coax if they wont do that it's safe to run it like you described there is enough space between the door and jam so the cable shouldn't get pinched but check it often.

The antenna light comming on when you key up means the swr is high, get a meter, just about any ts carries them, check and adjust the swr to get it as low as possible on channels 1, 20, and 40 also make sure your conections at the antenna and the radio are clean and tight, check the coax for cuts and worn spots if you find any replace the coax. If it still remains high you may have a bad mount or coax, they can be tested with an ohm meter or a continuity tester.

To get rid of the whining noise you spoke of run the power line for the radio direct to the bateries and the ground to the frame, running from the fuse box can get you in trouble if it's a company truck and can also cause a fire if done wrong.

Other things you can do to get rid of that whining noise is to ground the radios case to a good ground and ground the antenna mount to the frame of the truck (i'm assuming you have your antenna on an aftermarket mount) These are tips I learned here and have worked well for me on two company trucks so far, lots of good advice and smart people here!

    Hope that helps!
