I agree with shut down to fuel, and I don't smoke either. put out cigarette before get pulled up to the pumps. I see lot of folks fueling with cig in hand or mouth. do folks not know it's the fumes that ignite? thought that was taught in drivers ed in high school.
I dont shut down the truck, just because no one else here does, and the truck I'm assigned has on occasion had starting issues.
once I get my car replaced, I'll go back to shutting off engine to refuel w/ gasoline.

I have never seen a news report or heard a 1st hand account of a gas station fire. The only exception being when there was a car crash at the pump. Lots of folks leave there cars running without problems. The only way I could see there ever being a fire hazzard would be filling with gas on a hot day when you can get fumes coming out of the tank and had an open fire of some sort.
To all those that think the slightest spark will do the trick just think of all those cars out there with the fuel pumps in the tank and the exposed wiring inside (its a open connector at the fuel pump to harness). I have seen pumps burn up and melt the elec.connector yet not burn the car up.
Leaving the car/truck running while fueling is no more/less dangerous than driving it.

It happens all the time. When I lived in they made it quite clear you need to turn off all gas engines and ground yourself to the car before opening the gas cap and touching the pump. All it takes is one little spark and your on fire

    When you lived in what?

Where are the news reports to substantiate your claim that it happens all the time? And how often do you hear about big trucks catching fire at the fuel tanks due to a spark?

Just because you haven't heard about it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen:
Fires at Refueling Sites That Appear To Be Static Related - Summary

Those are only the ones where static is the expected cause.
