I like going to Hunt's. Always good miles to get there and it's not hard at all to get down there. Luckily for me, everyone hates going there so it gets thrown at me a lot since I told my dispatcher I will take it every time if someone is complaining. The second load I ever had was down there and it was no problem 5 days into my trucking career.

Should of been there back in the 70's early 80's
not the recreational centre it is today.

I heard all the horror stories about Hunt's Point and refused to go there for YEARS. Then one day when I just HAPPENED to be at home, they had one of those loads DM's are famous for:
"Hey we have a problem, we got a driver who was headed to (insert name of any place you've previously refused to go to) and he just got a call from his wife that his (name of some random close relative) was in an accident and is on life support and he's gotta get home to (some random place in the opposite direction) and we were wondering if you can meet this driver and switch with him"
Since I was at the house at the time, I accepted the load, because I was able to bring a certain "object" that would keep me safe.
I get there and find the local streets are relatively deserted, and the facility itself is surrounded by a barbed wire fence with armed security.
There's a parking area (guard will explain) and located in the center of the long buildings is a cafe. However it's a TERRIBLE place to eat, once you see how well the bathroom is kept clean, it gives you a hint how sanitary the kitchen might be. It's the only bathroom in that entire place that I'm aware of.
But every day, asian guys in tiny little cars come out and put chinese menus on all the trucks parked in the staging lot. I've ordered from them, they deliver it to your truck, and it's good food.
The docks are tight, but I've seen way worse. A few pull-ups and you got it. Not for rookies, but not something the average guy can't handle either.
I've been there 4 or 5 times, but I went back to putting NYC on my "NEVER AGAIN" list after they broke their promise not to RE-LOAD me in that city. My re-loads were also outside the city until the last time, they had me re-load in Brooklyn and ... I don't even want to get started on THAT experience...
I told them the only way I'll take a load to NYC now is if it's Hunt's Point, AND they have to have my re-load planned for me before I even accept the load going TO NYC, even if I'm in Nebraska at the time. So needless to say, I haven't been back there yet. -
Had to go to HPM at least 3 times a month with the first company I drove for. My 1st ever load was to that place. If there is one place in this country that you will not see me again it's Hunts Point. That place will let you know if trucking is the right job for you....

harrybottom, you say it was your first job, .. and it says on the right of your post that you've been driving 10 years.
My experience with the place has all been in the last 2 years or so.
Giuliani reportedly "cleaned it up", according to what I've been told. I've heard the horror stories about hijackings, mugging, trailers being broken into at stop signs, street signs being changed to get drivers lost, etc.
I never saw any of that.
