Isn't it a state by state law?...I know KY specifically has a law stating it's illegal to park on ramps or shoulder, other than for emergencies...

The linked story mentions the trooper hitting the rear of the trailer and if you look at the pictures you can see the rear corner of the trailer is caved in.

Sad.Whats even sadder to me is how all are so quick to point out what the driver did wrong. With at least 4 travel lanes going south my first question is why is the trooper on the shoulder during a high speed pursuit? The driver "checking" directions probably didn`t want to say he had to pee,or whatever.I can almost gaurantee that at 230am in that part of Maryland there isn`t anywhere to park but the shoulder.Anyway ,right or wrong, alot of you must sit around like vultures just waiting to crucify whoever doesn`t follow your way of doing things.

    Very sad indeed.

If a 4 wheeler was stopped on the shoulder and a truck ran into the back of it would anyone be trying to blame the driver of the car?

"Stopping to pee" would be an even stupider reason to stop there than checking directions. If that was the case, pull into the rest area, stop (even if no parking), use the facilities and carry on. If the driver looked out the window he could probably see the no parking sign.

It was probably just an innocent mistake. I'll bet the driver probably thought he would be okay just pulling off there for the minute or two he expected it would take. Unfortunately it just goes to show that tragedy can occur at any time and in any place and you cannot take that kind of risk... ever.

There are alot of people on this site that do know wrong. I see cops parked on the shoulder all the time doing radar but i guess thats ok because there a cop. I bet theres not 1 person that has not stopped atleast onece to do something like check directions if not sure or make a call i have better than running down the rd looking at a piece of paper or talking on the phone. Sad for the cop and his family but we will never realy know why the cop did what he did and crashed could be a number of reasons. But it bothers me so many throw throw truck driver under the bus.

interesting you say that.. just about 10 miles away from that rest area (at the 695/95 split) Tuesday night, a maryland state trooper was sitting on the shoulder on the right hand side in the dark going south!! not trying to say he's wrong but just cause you raise that point i thought i would share that....

Sorry for the family and the agency. His fellow officer's will take this as a learning moment and study it in order to determine how to prevent future incidents. They (we) do this to honor the fallen, not to criticise.
