    OK, Pete 387...

I'm trying to figure out how to install an electrical accessory (camera) to my truck. I've got everything figured out except the power. Don't know where to get my power from. Usually in cars there's a few accessory spots on the fuse panel. My CB has power leads going to it, GPS plugs into lighter and inverter wired straight to the batteries.

Question is...where and how does a guy hooks something up like a GPS, camera, CB or whatever that doesn't already have provided power leads? Kind of a dumb question I know...but I'm confused (which is not too rare either:biggrin_2559:)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions...:biggrin_25514:

    Gears,

I tried pulling up the Peterbilt 287 wiring diagram, but the nearest I could find was for the 387...:biggrin_25522:

What amperage does the entire camera system draw?

Perhaps tapping into the wiring between battery and inverter would be convenient... adding in a separate inline fuse for the circuit, of course...

    Gears Thanks this.

good thing is to make sure it is 12 volt
for my cig plug items--i found that when plugged into the lighter they tended to fall out get ;loose or what ever---so ig ot one of those 3 cig plug adapters--cut the male end off of the cord--then ran that into the dash to the back of the lighter--nice easy spot on a shaker--and you have both live and gnd right there--but once you are in the breaker box--just look for a circiut like say fridge--int lights lighter--that way if something does happen--you wont be with out your vital circiuts

Geez, don't know about the draw, don't have the paperwork here. It's just a blindspot camera, no big whup. It is a 12 volt, that's fo sho.

Whoa... That's a pretty slick little deal there Kansas. Thanks for that! I wonder if the O'Reilly or local car parts store would have one of them?

    Yeah, they'll have them.

They are pretty cool, I've used them often over the years. They come with two fuse. One for the original acc. and a second for the new item. All you really gotta do is decide if you want key on or off power and stick it in the hole. Try to use a slot from an accessory that you don't use much.

Just be careful whacking any plug ends off to hard wire. Your fuse block is 12v your accessory could potentially be only 5v.

Cell phones, GPS, photography cameras, etc are only 5v.

If you have a 12v power cord that plugs into a cigarette lighter that came with the backup cam it probably has a resistor that reduces to 5v. YOU NEED THAT LOL.

hmmm that atc fuse kit looks pretty good
if you used that then the multi tap for cig lighter ports--it would work good---i mounted it to the side of the dash with an existing screw--then just plugged gps and chargers into it--kind of out of the way then

    Gears:

On my 2006 387 there is an electrical accessory connection panel behind the glove box and I'm guessing that you have one too. To connect to it you need a P/N 16-09171 connector plug from the dealer (~$10). This connector has ~6" long red and black leads on it so you just need to splice on whatever length wires you need. After you plug in the connector you also need to plug in a mini-fuse of the correct amperage in order to power up the circuit.
