I need some advice. I'm new to this industry and have gotten off to a sketchy start. Spent 2 weeks at orientation which wasn't bad but cost money. First week out my first load with my trainer was to NYC. No big deal just kinda surprising. The trainers truck has broken down twice. First time was a bad oil pressure sending unit. Had to stay overnight in NY. Trainer had no comm checks and seemed lost on what to do. Got truck back Thursday to have it break down again. Clutch went out. Now I noticed this truck didn't shift right the day we left his house but he said "it's been acting up but I'm use to it" :biggrin_2556: So after it broke down the second time we waited 7 hours for another company driver to come and get us to take us to a rental car the company set up 90 miles away. On the way there his trucks lower radiator hose got a leak and started loosing water causing the truck to shut itself off.
Now his truck was covered in ashes so it was pretty obvious to me the company hasn't seen his truck either in some time.

Fast forward to today. I've been contacting my training coordinator as advised and he doesn't know anything new. I called the trainer and he contacted the shop and they haven't started working on the truck yet.

Now this isn't a small time company I'm with. I'm not going to name names but if you've followed any of my other posts you'll know.

But does this sound about how it goes. I'm not trying to be a ##### just seems kinda strange. I really don't think this is a normal week. The hardest part now is I've been sitting here all week and I'm not getting paid and my training time keeps getting pushed out further. I've got another company that I've talked with and they can get me out tomorrow if I want to go with them. Kinda a smaller company. Good people. More family orientated.

What would you do. Stick with the larger company and feel like a number or go with the smaller and start making money?

I would stick it out and put in a FULL year before moving on. Can't get any worse? Welcome to truck driving.

"They can get you out tomorrow". Explain further. What's involved with getting from where you are to that company ? Don't you need to be processed in first ? It's not likely you'll just show up tomorrow and get dispatched right away.

Sorry. They can get my out with a trainer. I spoke with them before I went with the company I'm with now. They already have an app I submitted while in school. They offered me a pre-hire. All I would need to do is do a 2 day orientation for paperwork and etc. So not exactly tomorrow but soon.

True I can't say I wouldn't have had the same experience there. I have a friend that works for them and he loves it. But he's only been driving for 4 months total.

I don't know. I'd hate to turn tail and run. But the company I'm with really seemed like they had it together. and now I'm wondering. I can't make money being broke down all the time. And I can't get a straight answer from the trainer on how issues have been handled in the past.

I would jump IF you are OK with what you know about the new company. But remember, It's not a perfect world out there. Have a frank discussion with the new company, like you're having here and voice your concerns. Kinda feel them out. Try to get some re-assurance that coming to them will be a good fit, and not a mistake.

Am I correct that you do not get paid anything for training time? And nothing for orientation either?

So what attracted you to, and is keeping you at this company?

I do get paid for training but only weeks I'm out with the trainer. I got orientation pay but it was a small amount. What attracted me was the pride they seemed like they had towards there equipment and employees. That they took care of there trucks and it wasn't just all about how they looked. So far image is there only concern.
