Finally, we found a truck within the budget, a 99 freightliner argosy, Cat and eaton 10 with 562k miles on it. Seller says it needs work, posible a tranny rebuild. He mentioned that the front shaft bearing was worn or locked up and motor wont run/ turn as a result.. Sounds like.......but this guy supposedly inherited truck from his late father and doesn't know much anyways. 'am thinking the tranny being locked up shouldn't prevent the motor from just turning over and running which is my question. Called and got some estimates to rebuild tranny. At a point, I will probably have to go over there and check it out, and possiblly put it in a shop. but don't wanna make that 800 mile trip and find out I need a new motor or something more serious than that. Any insights? Thanks in advance.
A 425 CAT ?. Will it run with a locked tranny?

Sounds like a seize motor, not transmission. Tell him to get it started before you make the trip.
-
Transmission input shaft is only splined thru the clutch discs.Sits in a pilot bearing at the crank.Sounds like engine trouble to me.Also if you can move the gear shifter the transmission isn`t locked up.You could diagnose farther by removing a driveshaft between trans and rears and try to start then.

Release the clutch and that will allow a motor to start with a stuck trans.
If it won't turn then, run far and fast.Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
I wouldn't waste my time even going to look at it, there are enough decent trucks out there if you look hard enough.

if the trans is locked up that hard. i don't think a rebuild will help. the case will probally be cracked around the input shaft bearing. but if the moneys right on it it may not be that bad.
