You have a point but there is also a point where people start to question whether the job is worth all the hassle. I was recently looking at one of these companies who do the BMI and sleep apnea thing and I changed my mind after I realized "Here I am standing in a #### mirror measuring my $%@ing neck and being worried that my measurement of 16 and 3/4th might be less than what their doctor reads. Isn't this a little ridiculous and pathetic?"
...I started to feel like a piece of meat rather than an applicant who wants to haul meat! If the employment relationship starts out like this one wonders how it will be later on down the road.
To each their own, I guess. -
I44 accident in OK last year. The driver in daylight, clear conditions came over the top of a hill and slammed into a line of stopped traffic with no braking before impact. Killed 10 people, including a number of children, and destroyed 5 4-wheelers. There wasn't much left of those 5 cars. He had warning though slowing traffic before the crest of the hill, and people calling "brake check" on CH19.
The driver had a diagnosed (by a medical doctor) history of sleep apnea. That kind of accident can fianancially destroy a carrier, and it ended the driver's career (try 10 counts of negligent homicide, I believe.) Best guess is he was asleep at the wheel going over the crest, because he won't admit to what happened.
This isn't some little non-critical industry - if you f-up, people die. If you can't deal with it, go flip burgers.Rollover the Original Thanks this. -
Yeah, this was definitly sleep apnea, good thing they measured his neck size and discovered the cause!

Alot of hoopla over nothing boy if that's the worst thing a driver could do then nobody's got any hope left

The issue is the lack of clearly stated guidelines and expectations with several companies. Often it seems the students and potential recruits aren't even told of what exactly will be checked and what the exact requirements are, what options they will have, etc. T
Your argument is a separate issue -- whether or not the tests are actually necessary. I have no problem with it and actually agree (though I think everyone should be tested and the company should probably be supplying the home testing kits or some such thing for recruits). I have a problem with all the uncertainty and the lack of information provided to the recruit. -
There is no home test kit for OSA.

Go for it.......
There's many reasons why insulin using diabetics are scrutinized and limited in the use of a CMV.....And one of them is the FMCSA isn't mean either....
