I w-9 them all and charge broker fee if I am using my money. This is an outdated systems that just adds costs to the end customer. Some are figuring this out but in lengthy union contracts that will not allow them to change.

I understand that, but I still don't see why we should even bother with a place that charges ANYTHING to unload product that they ordered. Just like low-ball rates and brokers who pocket some of the FSC... they should all be drug out back and knee-capped!

You need to call the police. If nothing else the wrecker companies are in cahoots with the police. This happened to a friend of mine. A driver loaded melons out of FL for Canada and my friend never heard from him again. He called the police to report the truck, trailer and driver missing. About 3 weeks later he got a call. The driver had ditched the truck, trailer and load at the Detroiter Truckstop. The Detroiter finally got tired of it being in their lot unattended and called a wrecker to get it out of there. The wrecker came and entered the info off the equipment and noticed it was being looked for by the police. My friend did get his truck and trailer back, minus a CB radio, and well, you can guess what happened to the load of melons in a vented van in June for 3 weeks....

AND... speaking as someone with heavy towing experience.. if the truck is on private property and the police are called, it becomes a police-generated tow, and the tow company charges (has to, state law, has to be evenly applied).... just like towing from an accident scene. 2-3 hours worth of driving enroute, hook up, and dropping can easily turn into $500-1,000... PLUS a daily storage fee, and most companies I've seen charge $25 for a car.. and up to $100 a day for a semi.
If a private property impound (PPI) company is called, the rates are even higher.
I have a few days to kill this week... find the truck, get me a plane ticket, and I'll go get it.. whether the guy is in it or not... drive it to you, you fly me home.. done deal. If the freight is still good, I'll deliver it. And for less than a police-generated tow and two weeks worth of storage fees.SHC Thanks this.
