No... the gaskets cannot be replaced. You have to replace the whole pump. Cummins will not sell you just the gasket. That is a known problem with the ISX (which is what it appears you have).

Good thing you caught that before it caught on fire. Don't those newer Pete's also have a relay on the firewall that will cause similar starting problems?

Got off the horn with Peterbilt parts and they have access to gaskets. I'm going to yank that sucker off, 1st light tomorrow and take it down to them.

That is the primer pump isn't it?

Yes it is. Mine had a ride on the hook after my shop wanted to wait til the weekend to get it done.

It started leaking a little... then a lot... then it was chugging black smoke and spinning the tires with an empty trailer (like triple the horsepower :biggrin_2555:)... then it croaked and wouldn't restart.

Hey while you have the starter cables off for cleaning check the inside jam nut against the positive stud on the solenoid. You can have tight cables but if the inside nut is loose you may as well have loose cables. If the inside jamnut was loose it will cause an acring inside on the contact of the solenoid, and the solenoid will be toast anyways, and most likely fail for sure when you least expect it. The other issue would be to check the frame ground by the starter they have a tendency to loosen up and corrode also.

Yep you got a bad boost or primer pump, mine went bad too on my ISX. When they leak like that you have to crank the engine longer to start, if yours will crank!

The other thing to try in addition to cleaning the cable ends like you have already done, is to give the cable end a little twist as you have it disconnected. I have had a couple of cables that looked good on the end be very corroded UNDER the insulation at the end, and when I twisted them just about came apart.

Actually, they're going to work. They're the ones that hold the "SLOW" and "STOP" signs in construction zones.
