Something I never saw before about 2 years ago, now I see at least one everyday; some flatbedder with a suicide coil and he has two straps crossed in an "X" pattern over top of the coil. Strap runs rear right side to front left side and vice versa on other side.

First of all, this is not a recognized way to secure a coil and doesn't count for any tie-downs.

Secondly, only shotgun loads require a strap over the top.

I shake my head in wonderment (is that a word?) whenever I see this.

All I can think is some brainiac steel hauler came up with the idea and some other drivers saw and started copying and it has spread like a disease.

Usually see this on I-65. And usually ratty looking rigs.

And don't tell me it's to hold the tarp down. They sell rubber thingys called tarp straps for that.

I know of at least one large flatbed company that teaches new hires to use a strap over the top of a suicide coil but not x-strapped. I've only x-chained shotgun coils.

Any strap over a suicide coil doesn't count for a tie-down.

Horton drivers say they teach them to chain to the frame!

The only time I used straps was on shotgun coils. Eye to the sky I used chains. Suicide I never crossed chains. Shotgun I would cross one or two and horseshoe the rest. I also use a trip chain on front and rear of shotgun and eye to the sky with a coil block, but did not count it as a securement.

I would xstrap a suicide coil to make it easier to 'tent' the tarp. Of course id use how ever many chain nessecary to secure the coil, x strap then the tarp.

I agree, it's completely pointless but I see no shortage of company drivers doing it.

FYI Your not allowed to cross chains on a suicide coil. Funny thing is a strap is required over a shotgun coil but it's pointless since it won't hold crap, especially it's an oiled coil. Makes someone feel safe though.:biggrin_2559:

Most of the guys doing it are strapping over the tarp, not under it so it has no affect on the "tent".

I know and was trained by that same company. :biggrin_25525:

We were told one strap over a suicide to help keep the trailer from flexing. Of course, it also adds 5000 lbs securement. Up, down, side to side, front back securement. Once I figured that out after having it drilled into my head in Des Moines for two weeks, it was easy to secure anything to a skateboard.

I dont know why guys strap over top of their tarps. First off it will damage the tarps over time and second it looks like ****. Also seeing a lot of tarps wrapped around the coil. I guess it thicker steel that wont be damaged by d rings or bungee s hooks. I hauled a few tall skidded alumimum 'beer can' coils where none of the d rings or s hooks could touch the coil face so not to dent the thin metal.
