yeah i can always enjoy a good laugh when someone on the cb radio or at the truck stop restaurant spews off about being a former seal, ranger, commander of a battalion, whatever.....

when in fact, all of them can't check a seal for leaks, don't know what a ford ranger is, or command any thing........ but a commode...... and not wash their hands when they are done....:biggrin_2551:

I tried to find the post I saw some time ago in a similar thread.
I can't remember specifics but is quoted some official source stating that there were only 1796 (can't remember actual number) of these special forces types deployed over that period in Afghanistan.
The guy posting said that he knew it was BS because he had met 5000 of them at various truck stops.

I've run into this BS several times... that's the guy who needs a "Seal check"... jump him behind a row of trucks and see if he can fight. If he thrashes you, he was being honest about it... if you drop him, he was lying.

Then again, having served with many, many special people in the military, I've noted one thing in common. If they've done these tasks and had this training, be it Navy, Army, Air Force or Marines... they don't talk about it, except with people they know to be under the same designation.

You can bet that if a guy brings up the subject, it's BS.

It's kinda like all the former special forces guys out here now days.

Heck I know of 2 guys I have worked with that were true special forces and I never knew it for years untill we all got together one day on a run and they started talking with me being there and that's how I found out about them being ex special forces.
They both had a certain item with them they never flash to people, but they allways have it with them.

I volunteered to re-do all of my reserve unit's 201 files in '87. We had a Major who had served in black ops in the Viet Nam era, he had an impressive list of awards that were "supressed". Poor S.O.B. can't wear any of them until the U.S. admits that we fought in Laos. Then there was the wannabe Spec-4 that wore a Viet Nam service ribbon on his class A's in a ceremony. The Top Sergeant took him into a back room and the sound of him screaming obscenities still echoes in my mind. That poor Specialist took the worst butt chewing anyone has EVER been subject to. The unit Cmdr was a Captain by Field Commission with a chest full of purple hearts and a steel plate in his skull. The Major and Captain earned respect, the Specialist almost earned an article 15. (I thought Top was way too easy on him).

If you didn't walk the walk, don't talk the talk. Real heroes don't need to brag and they can (and probably should) hurt you. A word to the wise..

Seems like every time I turn around someone says they were a sniper...most of them I wouldn't trust with a water gun

Last year I ran into a guy on the street telling me he was special forces in Vietnam and he was about 25. I started laying into him about taking credit for stuff he has never done and doesn't have the balls to do. By the time I finished he was crying.

Went to Navy gun school at Great Lakes back in the 70's. There was a guy, Jim, in class who when asked, claimed to be prior service in the Army. When asked what he did in the army, he said Green Beret, special forces. People were starting to sinker a little, someone asked if he had seen combat? He answered 2 tours in Vietnam, the ridicule from the other guys was out in his face. It didn't seem to bother him, he just walked away.
I got to know Jim and we went drinking together and hung out. I could tell he had been in the army,my dad retired army, and he told some very interesting stories. I was not 100% on the truth of them, but they were very interesting.
All through the course he caught a little crap from a few of the classmates.
The day before graduation our instructor was giving directions and told us the "uniform of the day". Then he looked straight at Jim and said everyone would wear any and all ribbons they were entitled to wear. The jerks who had been giving him crap got real quite.
The Navy does not throw out ribbons like candy, and they are super strict on prior service ribbons.
So the next morning Jim walks in with a full two rows (well maybe a row and a half) of ribbons on his chest. He had the vietnam service ribbon with the little star or whatever that shows he went more than once, A bronze star, a silver star, purple heart with a little doodad that showed he got it more than once, and some other ones i can't remember. The jerks were suddenly very respectful and hung on his every word.
We went out celebrating that night, got pretty pee eyed. After we split up to go to our different rooms, he took a spill down some stairs and really messed up a ankle, maybe to the point of having to leave the service.
Sadly I lost track of him after that.

Be sure of your facts before you accuse someone of being a fake. Fakes are easy to spot, they talk too much. Accuse the real deal and it could get interesting. I knew a former seal in the navy. He broke his legs bad enough to have to leave the seal teams, but could still be active duty regular Navy. That little dude was crazy and had no end of creative ways to inflict pain when he wanted to! lol
