In cargo vans, we don't have the same amount of room as the big rigs do for cooking / storing of food. They can have fridge's and crock pots. Space is limited in a van.
I'm just curious, what do you eat on the road? I just started driving a Sprinter for a company and I was prepared for life on the road, I freeze about 8 bottles of water, put another 4-6 cold bottles of water in the cooler. Luckily I'm a company driver and they put me up in hotels, so I can refreeze my water.
I've been buying oscar myer sub meat packages, apples, bananas, carrots, celery, (too much ranch dip), trail mix, jerky and granola bars.
But I know I'm going to get sick of the subs soon. What do you do to mix things up? I really don't want to eat more dollar menu food as a treat lol.

go to the links on this site about cooking in the truck, plenty of info, 12 volt lunchbox cookers, crockpots, precook meals at home when you can and reheat in the lunchbox

I've done searches and read the other forums. Space is a problem. A cargo van, I don't have that much room. I need to be able to haul 3 skids, so I have my bag of clothes, laptop, cooler and blow up mattress, hard hat, work boots, all in the drivers and passengers area. I don't have room for lunchbox cookers and crock pots.
Thats why I posted this in the expediting forum, hoping that other van drivers might have some helpful experience. -
Try buying tortillas instead of sub buns, I do that as I got tired of eating sandwiches all the time, also, buy bags of salad to break up things. Yes I do drive a big truck, but I don't carry any cookers or anything like that, only a big cooler. but you can make it work.
macavoy Thanks this. -
ok, if they put you "up in motels" like you say, why do you need a blow up mattress..??
instead of bottles upon bottles of water, why can't you take say maybe 2 thermos bottles or a big thermos type cooler, fill that half way with water, let it freeze, then fill it to the top with water..??
how big a bag for your clothes, a "gym bag", or a full sized duffel bag?
you need to downsize what you are taking, sounds to me like you got half your house with you.macavoy Thanks this. -
Except for the cooler and mattress everything can fit in your cargo doors , whats the problem?
-
You can put a power and verter in a microwave crock pot there is lots of things you can use and store in a cargo van

Just be happy you have enough $$$ to actually eat...

Thx, I actually bought some tortillas yesterday. Changed up my meat, that helped a bit too.
I'm an expeditor, so I get kicked out of the hotel and 11 am. I don't get hotels until it looks like I'm done for the night, so I spend a lot of time in the van. I like to lie down and watch movies during the day. Also, if I get to a drop at 4am, they aren't going to pay for a hotel for me.
I use bottles upon water to keep the cooler cool.
But I do have a big duffel bag and I don't wear half the clothes. I probably should downgrade that.
Talk about timing, I didn't get paid today. I've got enough money for about 4-5 days of food otr then I'm going to need a cash advance or my pay.
Thx for the suggestions and criticisms. I'm still learning, so I appreciate everything. Keep them coming. -
I ran for ConWayNow for just over two years... too many givebacks and nothing in return. the Prez of the company was a bold faced liar and I'm glad they went south...
