It has been almost two years since I have been in the driver's seat of a big rig. I just recently signed on with another company and have been driving for about two weeks now. I don't remember so many truck drivers being uncompliant as I have seen since I have been back out here. It seems as more and more trucks breaking the speed limits, driving in the wrong lanes and just plain disrespectful out on the roads. Just wondering if there are any professional drivers left out here.#

Going over the Breaux Bridge in Louisiana - no trucks in left lane and truck speed limit is 55. I'm doing about 58 mph and I see trucks start lining up behind me nose to nose, then out of my rear mirrors I see a truck jump into the left lane and pass me doing around 65+ mph, then another one. I look over and see these drivers yacking away in their CBs, so out of curiosity I turn on the CB. Sure enough, some of the other truck drivers were complaining over the fact that I was going to slow. Since when is doing 58 in a 55 a problem? My goal is to have a ticket free, incident free driving career if at all possible. So what's going on, why is operating a CMV in a safe and respectful manner so wrong lately?

Tell me about it! The:Police car v2: are really wathcing and cracking down in our area. I do the speed limit if I am alone on the highway, but keep the pace with the other vehicles when in a crowded area. I see people in cars do this as well as the trucks, but I do not worry so much about the cars. Lately I have had to pull over onto the right shoulder a few times while the left lane was full to avoid being smacked. Delivery schedules getting tighter? I don't know.

Turn down the cb and let them complain... However; remember 58 is still speeding in a 55.

    Depends.

58 on my speedometer is 55 by my GPS and radar scanners that are sometimes displayed.

What really makes me laugh is to listen to these seasoned truckers complain about fuel prices. All the while the are wasting fuel by speeding.

Dont worry about them mate! Over here we call them cowboys! No load is more important than yours and everyones safety! Just make sure if you pull up at a truck stop up the road for the night you lock everything up and check and re-check everything before you go as these 'cowboys' can be theiving barstards! I've even heard storys of guys finding their turn tables being un-locked!

How do you know they're seasoned drivers? You come to my place of employment and you see very experienced drivers following all the laws. We used defensive driving technics that work because our goal is to get our safety bonus. We've had drivers that have 20 to 30 years of safe drivers without so much as a scratch on the truck or a drop of product spilled on the ground. 30 years has to be many million of miles but since we drive mostly local we go by time and not miles. I also believe it's much harder to have a safe record in city driving where you have to deal with traffic all day long. We are not the only company, there's many gasoline haulers that have perfect records.

If you're taught bad habits from the start they will stay with you unless you change. But I don't think you'll see the hot shot drivers driving a truck for a company that pays really good and has drivers that stay with them until they retire. You have the right idea to keep a clean safe record because in years to come you'll be able to experience the top pay along with great benefits and you'll find a good company and stay with them.

I blame the way the system is set up from the beginning. You have schools that only want to get the student their CDL then push them out the door. They have no idea how to handle a truck and some of them should have been dropped from school but they want their money. Then they can only find the mega carriers that only care that the load gets down the road. How can a driver learn when his or her trainer has only been driving for 6 months themselves? The industry needs to use those very experienced safe drivers to teach the new drivers like it was many years ago. But you have to reward the trainers and the trainer just does not want to waste his or her time. Besides that there's plenty of drivers like myself that will not put their reputation on the line when you don't have the support from the company.

Like them there NASCAR boys say, "run yer own race". If someone wants to ##### and moan because you're running 58 in a 55, let 'em. They're not responsible for your safety, your job, your load, YOU ARE!
